This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of St Petersburg, with a TWGC record of 3 wins and 10 losses; Gunner Mason! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 7 wins and 8 losses; Trip Fontaine! The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Tiny Johnson and Daniel Franklin.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Fontaine shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mason pinned against the ropes. Mason gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Trip Fontaine seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Fontaine manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Mason on his heels. He'll look to pass Mason's guard now, I'm sure. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Mason (0) vs (2) Fontaine Fontaine trying to control but Mason is working from the bottom. Fontaine content to stall in guard here. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. It looks like Fontaine might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fontaine stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mason swivels though and keeps the full guard. Fontaine preventing the sweep. Fontaine is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Mason seems keen to control Fontaine's posture. Fontaine looking to pass the guard. Mason wants to sweep but no luck. Mason might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Mason looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fontaine trying to control the position from guard on top but Mason is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Fontaine wants to pass the guard but Mason is keeping the position. Fontaine trying to move into half guard but instead Mason has managed to sweep! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Mason (2) vs (2) Fontaine Fontaine keeping moving, preventing Mason from controlling successfully. Mason is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Fontaine escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mason gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Mason trying to control the position from guard on top but Fontaine is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Fontaine is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Fontaine not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mason got a little sloppy there for a moment and Fontaine has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mason has managed to get both his arms back between Fontaine's legs - danger averted. Fontaine tries to land a sweep but no joy. Mason trying to control but Fontaine is working from the bottom. Fontaine had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mason defends it easily. Mason wants to control from the top but Fontaine keeps moving.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Mason content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Fontaine has locked up a guillotine! Fontaine's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Mason is holding on here and Fontaine must be using up a lot of energy. Mason has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Fontaine gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
