Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paulo Mendes (ranked 1714 p4p, 2186 weight class) and Hideyoshi Yamasaki (ranked 213 p4p, 254 weight class). Mendes comes into the arena with Future - Last Breath blaring out of the sound system. Yamasaki is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: 2Pac - Only God Can Judge Me. Paulo Mendes is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paulo Mendes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hideyoshi Yamasaki! The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Russell Pearce and Anthony Taglia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendes shoots in looking for a takedown. Yamasaki tries to sprawl out of it but Mendes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Yamasaki manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Mendes lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent. Mendes takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Mendes takes a shot right to the bread basket. Yamasaki misses with an uppercut. Mendes saw that one coming. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mendes slips under a jab from Yamasaki. Mendes takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming. Yamasaki throws a poor cross that misses
and Mendes counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Mendes looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Yamasaki loads up on a big right hand but Mendes slips the punch. As Yamasaki looks to move away, Mendes throws a big counter combo but Yamasaki just gets out of the way. Hideyoshi Yamasaki is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendes ducks under a wild hook from Yamasaki. Mendes tries for a takedown but Yamasaki circles away easily and Mendes takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Yamasaki misses with a body shot.
Yamasaki wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Yamasaki comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Yamasaki lands a jab-cross combination.
It looks like Paulo Mendes has been cut. Nice straight punches there by Mendes. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Mendes. Nice defenses there by Mendes. Yamasaki lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Yamasaki lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Mendes circles away quickly and effectively. Mendes shoots in but no luck this time. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Paulo Mendes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendes shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it. Yamasaki scores with a nice right hand.
Mendes walks into a left hand. Hideyoshi Yamasaki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Mendes takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Yamasaki's coach down at California Top Team was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Yamasaki's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Mendes walks into a straight right hand from Yamasaki. Mendes shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Yamasaki as he jumps to the side. Yamasaki cracks Mendes with a good jab. Yamasaki pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Mendes looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Yamasaki is fending him off so far but Mendes persists. Nope, Yamasaki circles away and we're back to standing. Yamasaki lands with a hook. Mendes tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Yamasaki throws a shot to the body.
Mendes defending well as Yamasaki loads up on a big left hand. Mendes drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Yamasaki catches Mendes with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong! Mendes takes one to the side of the head.

and Mendes counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Still in half guard, Mendes seems content to control. Mendes trying to control from half guard but Yamasaki is working away. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mendes looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mendes lands with a punch from half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ground and pound from Mendes. Mendes blocks the strikes from Yamasaki.
Yamasaki wants to improve his position but Mendes is controlling well.
Mendes is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Yamasaki has hold of Mendes's hands but Mendes slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Yamasaki is looking for a sweep. Mendes is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Hideyoshi Yamasaki dominated that round. The cut man is working on Paulo Mendes's cut. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Yamasaki waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Mendes. Nice defenses there by Mendes. Mendes changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Nice jab there from Yamasaki. Mendes shoots in for a double leg but Yamasaki sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Mendes cracks Yamasaki with an open hand slap. Mendes avoids the body shot from Yamasaki.
Mendes appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Yamasaki swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Yamasaki scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Yamasaki scores with a shot to the body.
Yamasaki pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Mendes back to the cage. Yamasaki follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Yamasaki displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mendes takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendes moves away from the strike by Yamasaki. Yamasaki connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Mendes ducks under a wild hook from Yamasaki. Mendes appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Yamasaki lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw. Yamasaki swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Mendes counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Yamasaki is refusing to be controlled, as Mendes sits in half guard. Mendes controlling the action here. Mendes prevents Yamasaki from improving his position. Paulo Mendes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Mendes is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Yamasaki doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Mendes.

Mendes is trying to control. Yamasaki wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Mendes works his way into full mount! Mendes looking for a guillotine from mount but Yamasaki is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendes is controlling this nicely and is looking to make no mistakes. Yamasaki is trying to wiggle out of this horrible position. Yamasaki flips to his side and attempts to get a leg in for half guard. Mendes anticipates the leg and manages to get behind Yamasaki and secures both hooks! This could be bad! Mendes slips an arm under Yamasaki chin and tries to position for a rear naked choke. Mendes has worked the choke in now and it looks tight. Mendes is squeezing on Yamasaki like an anaconda would it's prey. Yamasaki fails to tap and has fallen unconscious! We've got ourselves a winner by way of a rear naked choke!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:19 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Paulo Mendes! Paulo Mendes decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
