PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gabriel Soares (ranked 690 p4p, 1837 weight class) and Sao Alela (ranked 77 p4p, 187 weight class). Alela is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Cryin' Like a Bitch. The key to victory for Gabriel Soares has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gabriel Soares!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 37 - 30 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Sao Alela!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Paul Aken and Daniel Blasius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alela shoots in for a takedown but Soares shows good takedown defense.
Nice defenses there by Soares.
Soares is looking to counter the offense by Alela and move into the clinch.

Soares has closed the distance and engaged Alela in a clinch.
Alela lands a hook to the side of the head.
I was talking to Soares's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Soares ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Soares no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Soares can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Alela controls the pace.
Soares is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Alela is stalling in the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Soares is looking for a triangle but Alela pushes his legs off easily.
Alela looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Alela pushing down on Soares's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Alela is working for a kimura here but Soares manages to reverse the position and he's now in Alela's guard.
Soares is standing up over Alela. Alela looks to escape but Soares dives into side control.

Soares wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Alela, who protects the arm well.
Alela is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Soares is controlling him well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Alela explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
Alela walks into a stiff left hand from Soares.
Alela fails to land the takedown.
Alela shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Soares defends it nicely.
Soares tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Alela manages to circle out of the way.
Gabriel Soares has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sao Alela.
Alela throws a chopping leg kick but Soares manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Alela missing with a left hand there. Soares was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Soares moves into the clinch successfully.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Alela misses with some punches.

Alela misses with a hook to the ribs.
Soares lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Alela working some nice short punches in the clinch.

Soares pulls Alela into guard.

Soares is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Alela is aware though and is defending well.
Alela wants to control from the top but Soares keeps moving.
Soares seems keen to control Alela's posture.
Alela must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Alela trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Alela got a little sloppy there for a moment and Soares has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Alela has managed to get both his arms back between Soares's legs - danger averted.
Soares controls Alela momentarily but Alela frees himself.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Alela wants to control from the top but Soares keeps moving.

Soares working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Alela doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Alela manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Soares has his foot on Alela's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Alela works his way back into a safe position though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Soares is trying to keep Alela in close.
Alela is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Alela looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
A bone on bone clash there as Soares blocks the leg kick.
Soares misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Alela.
Soares scores with a punch to the head.
Alela loads up on a big right hand but Soares slips the punch.
A head kick misses from Alela.
Alela fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Alela scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Alela misses with a leg kick.
Alela throws a body punch but Soares moves out of range.
Soares tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Alela manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Sao Alela seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Soares holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Soares is trying to pull guard but Alela has him pressed against the cage.

Soares has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Alela uses from the top position.
Alela controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Alela with a flurry of punches that miss.
Alela slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Alela content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Soares has locked up a guillotine! Soares's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Alela is holding on here and Soares must be using up a lot of energy. Alela has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Soares gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
