PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Curtis Mason (ranked 4722 p4p, 4604 weight class) and David Estes (ranked 447 p4p, 442 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that David Estes was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Curtis Mason!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, David Estes!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Taro Takaoka and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mason moves into the clinch successfully.
Mason leaning against his opponent.

Mason has hold of one of Estes's legs. Estes is fighting the takedown attempt but Mason gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Mason controls from within his opponent's guard.
Mason trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Estes manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Mason pulls Estes in close to prevent any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mason is looking to sweep but instead, Estes has passed into half guard.
Estes uses his free foot to push down on Mason's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Mason.
Estes prevents Mason from getting the reversal.
Estes looking to control but Mason is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Mason is wriggling around trying to escape.
Mason on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Mason tries to get out of the position.
Mason tries to buck Estes off but he can't manage it.

Mason is looking to get to half guard.
Mason tries to lock up and control but Estes gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Estes trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Mason tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mason wants to get back to his feet.

Estes prevents Mason from getting the reversal.
We've been informed that Estes has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Mason tries to hold on but Estes pushes him away.
Mason is squirming around, avoiding Estes's attempts to control the action.
Estes avoids the attempt from Mason to control.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Estes can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mason is looking to escape.
Mason bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Mason is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Mason is looking to pass into half guard but Estes pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Estes is in guard.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Estes fails with the takedown

and Mason counters with a takedown into side control.
Mason definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Mason tries to stand but Estes is controlling his head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Estes is looking to regain half guard here but Mason keeps moving and retains side control.
Mason content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Mason has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mason tries to stand but Estes is controlling his head.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.
Estes trying to remain calm as Mason controls from the top position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Mason forces Estes back against the cage and clinches.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Mason is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Mason throws an elbow that misses. Estes uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Mason's guard. Nice move by Estes!

Estes trying to control the position from guard on top but Mason is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mason is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Estes can do to turn this around?

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Mason holds on and takes a little breather.
Estes pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mason is keeping the position for now.

Mason looking for subs off his back but Estes has passed one foot through into half guard.

Mason has his hands clasped together around Estes's back. He's all about the action.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mason wants to sweep but no luck.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Mason wants to get up but he can't break Estes's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Curtis Mason overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Estes regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Mason.
Estes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Mason wants to stand and escape but instead Estes has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Mason holds on to Estes's head and controls the position momentarily.
Mason tries to get back to half guard but can't.
You can see the frustration on Mason's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Estes is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Mason rushes Estes and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Mason pulls guard effortlessly.

Mason escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Estes gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Mason is adopting a defensive guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
Curtis Mason showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Mason has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Curtis Mason spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
