The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Darren bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick. Jeffries moves in looking to clinch but Darren pushes him off. Jeffries fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Darren goes for a spinning back kick but it misses. Jeffries darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Jeffries looks to score some points with some ground and pound. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jeffries connects with a nice short shot to Darren's temple. Darren trying to control here.
Jeffries throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Jeffries lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Darren can do anything to dispel that myth. Darren regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Jeffries. Jeffries lands a couple of digs. Jeffries with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
That's one minute gone in the round. Darren is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Jeffries has his hands clasped together but Darren extends and breaks Jeffries's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Darren.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:20 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Rafael Darren! A less than humble Rafael Darren misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities. In defeat, Deon Jeffries stepped up to the mic, saying 'I’ll be back better stronger and faster you bastards.'.
