PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Caleb Jones (ranked 2036 p4p, 25029 weight class) and Kadyn Mercer (ranked 147 p4p, 313 weight class). Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 14 - 2, fighting out of Helsinki, Caleb Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kadyn Mercer!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Paul Aken and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mercer changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Jones tries to avoid it but Mercer manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Jones to the ground. Jones escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mercer darts in looking for a takedown but Jones gets double underhooks and turns Mercer into the cage.

Jones darts in and clinches Mercer up against the cage.
Mercer tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Jones just stands there and leans against the cage.
Caleb Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kadyn Mercer.

Jones pulls Mercer into guard.
Jones not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Jones definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Mercer slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mercer doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mercer manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Jones seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jones is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mercer controlling from the top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mercer closes the distance and clinches up with Jones, looking for a takedown. Mercer pushes Jones against the cage but Jones circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Jones connects with a right hand. Mercer shakes it off.
Mercer shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Jones defends it nicely.
Jones tries to counter by clinching up but Mercer breaks away and moves out of range.

Jones has managed to clinch.

Jones jumps guard.

Jones has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mercer can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Jones is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mercer defends well.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mercer shoots in for a takedown but Jones shows good takedown defense.
Mercer is trying hard to land a takedown here. Jones sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Mercer tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jones sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Mercer somewhat.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Jones lands with a hook. Mercer tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Jones lands a slapping body shot.
Jones bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Mercer tries for a takedown but Jones sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
As Mercer tries to get set, Jones tries to push him back and clinch up but Mercer manages to avoid the attempt.
Mercer closes this distance looking for a takedown but Jones circles away.
Mercer shoots in looking for a takedown. Jones tries to sprawl out of it but Mercer keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jones manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
It looked like Jones wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

Jones escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mercer gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
