PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gao Chao (ranked 25026 p4p, 25241 weight class) and Jicheng Ruan (ranked 508 p4p, 515 weight class). Ruan has chosen Alright as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Gao Chao! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jicheng Ruan! The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Daniel Bishop and Richard Clark.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ruan throws a head kick that misses. A head kick misses from Ruan. Chao fails to land the takedown. As Chao backs off Ruan throws a huge counter combo but Chao manages to avoid it all. Ruan dodges the punch combination from Chao.
Chao gets a takedown into half guard. Chao is nestled in close to Ruan, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Chao with the ground and pound but Ruan uses the opportunity to regain guard. Chao controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Ruan preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Chao has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
That's one minute gone in the round. Chao stopping the sweep attempt from Ruan. Ruan has momentary wrist control but Chao slips an elbow through the middle. Ruan is trying to keep Chao in close.
Chao stands up over Ruan, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Chao landing with the ground and pound. Chao's corner is telling him to maintain position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Chao's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Chao makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Chao is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Chao postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Ruan is rocked! Ruan looks winded! Chao working some strikes from top position. Ruan is still in real trouble! Can Chao finish him? Chao is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Chao scoring with some ground and pound. Chao lands a couple of decent looking shots. Chao distracts Ruan with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Chao postures up from his opponent's guard, before exploding into some vicious ground and pound! Ruan covers up, he's hurt! Chao keeps throwing the strikes, glancing at the referee... Will he stop it?? One more big shot from Chao and the ref steps in to end the fight! Chao can't hide his delight as he celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Gao Chao! In his post fight interview, Gao Chao started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception. The defeated Jicheng Ruan had this to say: 'Where my cream pie at?'.
