Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Chris Jones! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Vitor Gustav! The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Marco Blurström and Ben Zyskovitsi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gustav rushes Jones and presses him up against the cage. Jones letting Gustav take a breather here. Gustav misses with an elbow over the top. Gustav managing to block the knees to the body from Jones.
Jones looking to throw knees to the head but Gustav is blocking nicely.
Gustav jumps guard and drags Jones to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Jones wants to control from the top but Gustav keeps moving. Gustav is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Gustav has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jones can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Jones forces his way into half guard. Jones looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jones is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gustav looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Gustav is looking for a sweep. Jones is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Jones wants to work for an arm triangle but Gustav is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Gustav punching from the bottom.
Gustav regains full guard. Nicely done. Jones got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gustav has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Jones has managed to get both his arms back between Gustav's legs - danger averted. Jones advances position into side control! Jones takes a little break here. Gustav wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Jones is looking to take a break and control but Gustav is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jones is trying to get an arm triangle but Gustav is defending well. Gustav is looking to reverse the position. Gustav gets back to half guard. Jones is trying to control the action in half guard but Gustav is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Jones is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Jones prevents Gustav from improving his position. Jones is looking for a kimura but Gustav is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Jones to get the leverage. Jones is breathing heavily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gustav looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Gustav won't allow Jones to pass to mount. Gustav looking for submissions off his back. Gustav looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Gustav tries a low kick but Jones avoids it. Gustav clinches up against the cage. Jones unloads a knee to the mid-section. Jones trying to land knees to the body.
Jones using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Gustav has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Jones is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Gustav is defending well for now. Jones is pressed up against the cage. Gustav has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Jones down to the mat. Jones avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Gustav shoots in for a takedown but Jones shows good takedown defense. Jones scores with a spinning back kick! Gustav fails in his attempt to clinch. A nice leg kick lands there from Jones.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gustav looks to land a body kick but Jones moved away. Jones explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work. That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Gustav crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Jones - the referee stops the clock and Gustav gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Jones. Gustav manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! A nice leg kick lands there from Jones. Jones throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Gustav's head. A slapping leg kick lands for Jones.
Jones scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Jones shoots in and drives through. Gustav sprawls well. Gustav feints and as Jones raises his hands in defense, Gustav changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Jones is looking for a triangle but Gustav pushes his legs off easily.
Jones is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Gustav defends well. Gustav drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gustav jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Gustav looking to pass the guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Chris Jones dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Gustav checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time. Jones with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Gustav looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Jones! Jones is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Jones slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Gustav is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Jones slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Jones will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Jones looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Gustav is defending well. Jones quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Gustav has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Jones celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
