PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Heiko Pander (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dan Sanchez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sanchez has chosen Taste of Ink - The Used as his entrance music. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Heiko Pander!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Dan Sanchez!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Roosa Järviläinen and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sanchez looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Sanchez uses his free foot to push down on Pander's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Pander.

Sanchez is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Pander can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Sanchez working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

Sanchez goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Pander is on top in guard.
Sanchez tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Pander knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sanchez on the ground.
Sanchez is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Pander got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sanchez has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Pander has managed to get both his arms back between Sanchez's legs - danger averted.
Sanchez looks gassed!

Sanchez looking for a guillotine here but Pander defends easily.
Pander wants to stand but Sanchez is controlling his posture from full guard.

Pander throwing strikes from guard but Sanchez blocks nicely.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sanchez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Sanchez has a closed guard, preventing Pander from standing up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pander thows a big elbow that misses.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sanchez can do anything to dispel that myth.

Pander avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Sanchez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pander's guard.
Sanchez is pushing down on Pander's leg trying to pass to half guard. Pander is fighting to maintain full guard but Sanchez has managed to sneak the leg through.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pander is trying to stand.

Sanchez is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Sanchez tries to pass the half guard into mount. Pander knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Pander wants to get back to his feet.
Pander wants to get back to full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Pander tries to close the distance and clinch but Sanchez swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Sanchez circles away from the clinch attempt.
Pander throws a right hand that Sanchez ducks under and follows up with a left that Sanchez also avoids with ease.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pander fails with the takedown

and Sanchez counters with a single leg into guard. Pander didn't expect that.

Sanchez drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Pander dives on top into guard.

Sanchez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Pander throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Pander wanted to stand there but Sanchez had control of the position.

Pander has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Pander shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Sanchez counters with a shoot takedown. Pander fights it but they end up in guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Pander is trying to stand back up but Sanchez is controlling him

Sanchez in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Pander tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Sanchez!
