PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Sime Soldic (ranked 1439 p4p, 1708 weight class) and Tom Korppila (ranked 133 p4p, 160 weight class). Korppila comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Mustasch - The Mauler kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sime Soldic!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Tom Korppila!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Jeff Smith and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Soldic throws a lazy right hand but Korppila sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Soldic scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Nice shot by Soldic.
Korppila tries to score a power double leg takedown but Soldic sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Korppila somewhat.
Soldic scoring well with a low kick there.
Soldic keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Korppila changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Soldic looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Korppila tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Korppila has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Korppila wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Soldic, who protects the arm well.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Korppila is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Soldic doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Korppila.

Korppila misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Korppila connects with a nice short shot to Soldic's temple.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Korppila fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Soldic sprawls well initially but Korppila persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Soldic really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Korppila is looking to take a break and control but Soldic is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Korppila feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Korppila lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Horrible takedown attempt by Korppila or perhaps it was just good defense by Soldic, which made it look bad.

Sime Soldic has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tom Korppila.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
