Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Gord Downey (ranked 5333 p4p, 4762 weight class) and Rodney Derek (ranked 341 p4p, 316 weight class). Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 2 - 5 - 1, fighting out of The Island, Gord Downey! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rodney Derek! The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Daniel Franklin and Santiago Holmes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Downey has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Derek. Downey definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Downey moves out of range of the body kick from Derek.
Derek connects with a looping right hand.
Derek uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Downey. Derek let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land. A slow jab from Downey misses its intended target. Downey takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Downey scores with a takedown into Derek's guard. Derek tries to land a sweep but no joy. Downey controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Downey postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Derek is controlling Downey's posture. Derek is looking to sweep but instead, Downey has passed into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Derek is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Downey is taking a breather. Derek says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Derek wants to improve his position but Downey is controlling well.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Downey prevents Derek from improving his position. Derek trying to control from the bottom.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Downey slows the pace down in half guard.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Downey is looking to clinch. A nice leg kick from Derek, right into the meat of the thigh.
Rodney Derek is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Downey has closed the distance and engaged Derek in a clinch.
Derek trying to control the position but instead, Downey has worked for underhooks and has pushed Derek into the cage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Downey gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. Downey controlling from the top position. Derek trying to control the position.
Downey is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Derek looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Downey sitting in guard here, content to control. Downey won't allow Derek to sweep him here. Downey stays in close to Derek's body and controls the position.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Downey shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Derek manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Downey is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Downey scoring with some ground and pound. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Downey controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Downey might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Derek looking to hit a scissor sweep but Downey is one step ahead there. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Gord Downey dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
A momentary lapse in concentration from Derek enables Downey to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Derek manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Downey is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Derek can do to turn this around? Downey looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Derek looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Downey works over Derek with some ground and pound from guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Downey slips nicely into half guard. Downey frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Downey tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Derek can do anything to dispel that myth. Derek working to try and regain half guard.
Downey pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Downey prevents Derek from getting the reversal.

Derek takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Downey cracks Derek with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Gord Downey dominated that second round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round! Derek moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot. Rodney Derek has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Gord Downey seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A jab from Derek does it's job there. Downey looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Derek! Derek is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Downey is one step ahead and moves to full mount! Downey lands a heavy elbow. Downey controlling the position easily from mount. Derek wants to hold on but Downey pushes him away. Derek tries to get back to half guard but can't. Downey tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Derek is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.

Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Derek really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

And that's the end of the fight! Gord Downey showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Downey, winning every round. Will the judges agree?
