Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Thufir Hawat (ranked 1475 p4p, 1963 weight class) and Romulus Gerber (ranked 195 p4p, 247 weight class). Thufir Hawat is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Thufir Hawat!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 30 - 30 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Romulus Gerber!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Josh West and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gerber tries for a takedown but Hawat circles away easily
and Hawat counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Hawat has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Gerber with a lazy takedown attempt
and Hawat counters with a stiff right hand.
Hawat leaves Gerber with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Thufir Hawat has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Romulus Gerber.
Hawat throws a head kick that misses.

Gerber feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Gerber throws a strike but Hawat rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Gerber looking to control but Hawat passes into half guard.
Hawat content to control rather than advance.
Hawat's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gerber is looking to improve his position.
Gerber is trying to stand.
Hawat looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Hawat in particular looking to stall.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hawat wants to pass to mount but Gerber is defending the position.
Hawat is taking a breather. Gerber says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Gerber is looking for a sweep. Hawat is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hawat keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Gerber has his takedown stuffed
and Hawat counters with a big head kick but Gerber shrugs it off.
Gerber throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Hawat's waist but Hawat gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gerber off to one side.
Gerber blocks a head kick by Hawat.
Gerber looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Gerber fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Hawat is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Gerber looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Gerber dives in for a single leg takedown but Hawat sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Gerber goes for a double leg but Hawat avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Hawat continues to drive forward.
Gerber takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gerber shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Hawat sprawls well. Hawat wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gerber gets slowly back to his feet.
Gerber shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gerber dives in and grabs Hawat's left leg, looking for a takedown. Hawat pushes down on Gerber's head and hops out.
Gerber looks winded!
Gerber is trying hard to land a takedown here. Hawat sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Hawat throws a quick counter head kick but Gerber was just out of range.
Hawat circles to his right before unloading a perfect head kick! Gerber drops to the canvas, hurt badly! Hawat follows Gerber to the ground and unloads with a series of strikes that force the referee to step in and end the fight! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:35 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Thufir Hawat!
A less than humble Thufir Hawat misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
