The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Hughes fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Fontaine to the ground. Hughes is now in Fontaine's guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Hughes (2) vs (0) Fontaine Fontaine is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Fontaine looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Hughes has picked Fontaine up and slammed him! Fontaine can't keep hold of the triangle and Hughes manages to pass to side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Hughes (5) vs (0) Fontaine Fontaine is trying to control Hughes's posture but Hughes avoids it. Fontaine is not content to let Hughes control the position. Fontaine is trying to get back to half guard. Hughes is looking to take a break and control but Fontaine is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hughes is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Fontaine is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Hughes is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Fontaine knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fontaine seems a little lost for a moment, as Hughes dominates the positioning. Hughes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Fontaine keeps working. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Fontaine tries to get back to half guard but can't. Fontaine is still trying to improve position. Fontaine keeping his opponent close.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hughes looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Fontaine is looking for a sweep. Hughes wants to control but Fontaine is keeping him busy. Hughes thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Hughes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Fontaine keeps working.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Fontaine struggling a bit here. Fontaine manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Hughes trying to control from half guard but Fontaine is working away. Fontaine wants to control but Hughes is keeping busy.
Fontaine is looking to improve his position.
Hughes is keen to just control but Fontaine is a slippery customer.

Fontaine is refusing to be controlled, as Hughes sits in half guard. Hughes seems to be looking for submissions.
Fontaine looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Hughes pushes past his half guard into mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Hughes (8) vs (0) Fontaine Hughes is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Fontaine to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Fontaine shrugs it off. Fontaine is squirming around, avoiding Hughes's attempts to control the action. Fontaine is working to get back to half guard.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Hughes goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Fontaine turns into him and now he's in Hughes's guard.

Hughes controls Fontaine momentarily but Fontaine frees himself. Hughes keeping full guard, as Fontaine tries to pass. Hughes keeping moving, preventing Fontaine from controlling successfully.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Hughes is looking to cinch up a triangle. Fontaine throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Hughes's body to avoid the submission. Hughes has instead reached around Fontaine's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Hughes arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
