PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Demian Gomes (ranked 4186 p4p, 4200 weight class) and Steve Colbert (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Demian Gomes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steve Colbert!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Richard Clark and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Colbert darts in and clinches Gomes up against the cage.
Colbert lands a body shot.

Colbert is trying to trip Gomes. He has hold of a leg but Gomes is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Colbert persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Colbert would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Gomes can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Colbert controls the pace.
Colbert must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gomes is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Colbert keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Gomes's head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gomes looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Colbert puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Colbert is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Colbert tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Colbert is looking to pass Gomes's guard but actually Gomes recovers to full guard.

Gomes lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Gomes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Colbert swivels though and keeps the full guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Colbert can do anything to dispel that myth.
Colbert is trying to stand up here but Gomes is controlling him well.

Colbert tries to get to full guard but Gomes has control of the leg.
Gomes is trying to control the action in half guard but Colbert is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Colbert dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Colbert misses with a body kick.
Gomes shoots in looking for a takedown but Colbert manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Gomes's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Gomes fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Colbert avoids it really well and circles away.
Gomes throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Colbert's waist but Colbert gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gomes off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Demian Gomes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Colbert pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Gomes shoots in but no luck this time.

Colbert decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Colbert is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Gomes!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Colbert avoids the attempt from Gomes to control.

Colbert tries to stand up but he's trapped just for the moment.

Colbert pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Gomes sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

The fighters are battling for position here. Gomes manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Gomes is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Colbert is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Colbert has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gomes is proving hard to escape from.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Colbert not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Steve Colbert showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Gomes's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Colbert has picked Gomes up - he's going for a ride! Colbert dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Colbert connects with a nice short shot to Gomes's temple.

Colbert is taking a breather. Gomes says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Colbert scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Colbert controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Gomes keeping full guard, as Colbert tries to pass.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Colbert has taken the fight to the clinch.
Colbert scores with a shot to the side of Gomes's head.

Gomes is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Colbert is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Colbert holds on and takes a little breather.
Colbert's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Colbert is striking off his back. Gomes thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.
Colbert is looking to improve his position.
Gomes stalling away here and it's allowed Colbert to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Demian Gomes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Colbert seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Gomes shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Colbert but Colbert pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Steve Colbert is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Gomes closes this distance looking for a takedown but Colbert circles away.

Steve Colbert comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Colbert has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
