PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jean Phillipe LaFleur (ranked 1896 p4p, 1988 weight class) and Philip Roth (ranked 240 p4p, 252 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jean Phillipe LaFleur!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Philip Roth!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, James Glass and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roth doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
The fighters circling - Roth throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
A little feinted left hand from LaFleur on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Roth throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

and LaFleur counters with a crisp one two that drops Roth! LaFleur thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Roth to his feet! Roth is in big trouble!
Roth misses with an uppercut. LaFleur saw that one coming.
Roth lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
We've been told by LaFleur's head coaches at FIGHT FOUNDERS (CA) that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Roth misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
A little feinted left hand from LaFleur on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Roth throws a body punch but LaFleur moves out of range.
LaFleur swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.

It looks like Jean Phillipe LaFleur has been cut.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

and Roth counters with a single leg into guard. LaFleur didn't expect that.

Roth trying to control the position from guard on top but LaFleur is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Roth tries to free his leg and advance position but LaFleur is retaining full guard.
LaFleur is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Roth is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
LaFleur looking to hit a scissor sweep but Roth is one step ahead there.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
LaFleur takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Roth will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Philip Roth seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
LaFleur throws a left and a right that both miss

and Roth counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for LaFleur!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Roth tries to advance to mount but can't.

Roth has control of an arm but LaFleur manages to advance to Roth's back!
Roth wants to escape the position.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.

Roth breaks LaFleur's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roth controls from within his opponent's guard.

Roth is pushing down on LaFleur's leg trying to pass to half guard. LaFleur is fighting to maintain full guard but Roth has managed to sneak the leg through.
LaFleur is concentrating on defense, preventing Roth from advancing position.
LaFleur is looking to improve his position.

Roth seems to be looking for submissions.
Roth has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Philip Roth dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Jean Phillipe LaFleur's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Roth shoots in for a takedown but LaFleur shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

and LaFleur counters with a right hand to the body.
Roth has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Roth there as he acknowledges the shot.

It looks like Philip Roth has been cut.

LaFleur drops Roth with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Roth looks back up at him and smiles so LaFleur waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.

Roth is rocked!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
LaFleur weaves into range and cracks Roth right on the temple with a beautiful overhand right! Roth goes down! He's out cold! Wow, what a beautiful knockout! LaFleur is strutting round the canvas like a movie star as the camera bulbs flash frantically.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:51 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Jean Phillipe LaFleur!
