PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jason Spartan (ranked 3028 p4p, 2635 weight class) and Jimmy Skoog (ranked 352 p4p, 311 weight class). Spartan comes to the cage accompanied by Try That in a Small Town. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jason Spartan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jimmy Skoog!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Reed Andrews and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Skoog scores with a hook.
Spartan fails to land the takedown.
Spartan tries to score a power double leg takedown but Skoog sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Spartan somewhat.
Good standup being displayed there by Skoog as he connects with a hook.
Skoog throws a body shot but no joy.
Skoog scores with a jab to the jaw.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Spartan fails with the takedown
enabling Skoog to counter with a crisp jab.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jason Spartan. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Skoog throws a good cross that connects.
No joy there for Skoog, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Spartan tries to close the distance and clinch but Skoog swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Skoog throws out a counter right but Spartan avoids it with no problem.
Spartan shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Skoog as he avoids it easily.
Spartan shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Skoog pinned against the cage. Skoog gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Skoog lands with a nice combination. Spartan backs away looking to recover.

Spartan takes the fight into the clinch.
Skoog is working Spartan over against the cage.

Spartan works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Spartan is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Skoog is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Spartan throwing strikes but missing.
Skoog really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Spartan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Skoog had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Spartan defends it easily.

Spartan wants to stand but Skoog has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Spartan slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Spartan trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Skoog manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Skoog looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Spartan striking off his back but it's not causing Skoog any problems.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Spartan lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Spartan throws a big right hand that misses.
Skoog trying to keep a closed guard but Spartan is proving a slippery customer.

Skoog working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Spartan doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Spartan manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Skoog looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Spartan passes into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Spartan trying to control the action but Skoog is working from the bottom.
Skoog won't allow Spartan to pass to mount.
Spartan thows a huge punch but Skoog dodges it nicely.
Skoog looks like he's trying to stand up.

Spartan is working for a kimura but Skoog is defending it quite comfortably.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jimmy Skoog dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Spartan changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Skoog tries to avoid it but Spartan manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Skoog to the ground. Skoog escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Spartan digs a right hand into Skoog's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Skoog's gas tank.

Spartan is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Skoog to keep the fight standing.

Skoog displaying some good clinch control by pressing Spartan up against the cage.
Spartan tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Skoog smiles and moves away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Spartan.

Spartan throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Skoog was covering up waiting for the punch and Spartan finishes the takedown easily into guard.
