Smith is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Descending by Lamb Of God. Derek Cook has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Derek Cook!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, David Smith!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Yves DeLean and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith closes this distance looking for a takedown but Cook circles away.

Smith closes the distance and clinches.

Smith gets control of Cook's arms and successfully pulls guard. Smith will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Cook from controlling successfully.

Smith is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Smith looking for a sweep. Not yet Smith, not yet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cook stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Smith will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Cook working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Smith's head.

Cook working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Cook cracks Smith with a solid left hand.
Cook trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Cook stands up and waves to Smith to follow him.
Smith tries for a takedown but Cook sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Cook blocks a head kick by Smith.
Cook throws a sloppy head kick and Smith moves out of range easily.
Cook shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Smith counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Smith wants to get up but he can't break Cook's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cook is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Cook working for a triangle but Smith defends it easily.
Cook is breathing heavily.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cook swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith wanted to stand there but Cook had control of the position.
Cook looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smith is one step ahead there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Smith gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Cook counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Smith's guard now.
Derek Cook has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of David Smith.
Smith is looking to stand up but Cook isn't so interested in that idea.
Smith not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Smith kicks Cook off and gets to his feet.

Smith drives through with a takedown into guard.
Smith trying to stand up but can't free himself from Cook's guard.
Smith advances to half guard.
Cook tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smith postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Cook to stand up.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Smith clinches up against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Smith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

David Smith dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Cook avoids the head kick by Smith.
David Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Cook fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Smith sprawls well initially but Cook persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Smith wants to get back to his feet.

Smith looking for submissions off his back.
Cook tries to stand but can't do so whilst Smith controls his leg.
Smith tries to roll over but Cook keeps him under control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Cook seems to be working for a kimura but Smith defends the submission attempt.
Cook has decided to stand back up but his arm is trapped. Whilst he's worrying about his arm, Smith works to full guard.

Smith wriggles free and stands up.

Smith takes the fight into the clinch.

Smith ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Smith no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Smith scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Smith rushes Cook and presses him up against the cage.
Smith lands a nice elbow.
Smith can't get the takedown.

Smith manages to break the clinch.
Derek Cook is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A good leg kick by Smith.

enabling Cook to counter with a crisp jab.
Smith doesn't manage to clinch there - Cook circles away.
Smith tries for a takedown but Cook sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Cook scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Cook decides to stand back up.

Cook tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Smith gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Cook wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Smith escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Smith shoots in and drives through. Cook sprawls well.

Cook feints and as Smith raises his hands in defense, Cook changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cook. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Cook postures up and lands a big shot to Smith's brow.

Cook drops back looking for a leg! Smith is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smith manages to kick Cook off! Cook jumps back into Smith's guard.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Cook from controlling successfully.

Smith thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Smith looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Smith is pulling down on Cook's head to control his posture.
Cook wants to stand and escape but instead Smith has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Cook can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Smith controls the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Derek Cook will probably get the nod.
That's time! Cook's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Smith prevents Cook from breaking the clinch.
Smith is leaning against Cook and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.

Smith pulls guard.
Cook stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Cook won't allow Smith to sweep him here.
Cook looking to sit in guard and control but Smith gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Smith stands up from Cook's guard - Smith perhaps looking for a knockout.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Horrible takedown by Smith or perhaps it was just good defense by Cook which made him look bad.
Cook tries for a takedown but Smith sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Smith shoots in looking for a takedown. Cook tries to sprawl out of it but Smith keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Cook manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Derek Cook has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of David Smith.
Smith tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Cook swivels and escapes.
Cook tries to close the distance and clinch up but Smith swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Smith misses with a body kick.
Smith fails with the takedown.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Cook clinches but Smith breaks the clinch

and Smith counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Cook's guard now.
Smith thows a big elbow that misses.

Cook wriggles free and stands up.
Smith misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Cook misses with a head kick.
Smith scores with a head kick.
Smith misses with a low kick.
Cook shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense.
Smith shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Cook counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Smith's guard now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cook's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Smith is looking to take a break and control but Cook is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Smith throwing shots but Cook is blocking nicely.
David Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.
Smith seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Cook controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
It looks like Smith is going to stand back up.
Cook keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Cook has hold of Smith's hands but Smith slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

And that's the end of the fight!
David Smith comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Smith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
