Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 10 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Lawson Serrano! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Scott Potter! The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Bart Greer and Sandra Marshall.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A looping hook to the body misses from Potter. Serrano does a little dance to reset his feet. Serrano tries to counter with a takedown but Potter is quick to defend against it. Good standup being displayed there by Potter as he connects with a hook.
It looks like Lawson Serrano has been cut. Potter with a jab. Serrano shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Potter defends it nicely. We've been hearing reports that Serrano has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Potter throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Potter swings widly with a right hand
and Serrano counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Potter! Serrano prevents Potter from escaping the position. Serrano in side control lands a decent elbow.
That's one minute gone in the round. Serrano is chipping away with strikes.
Potter wants to get back to his feet. Serrano landing a few strikes. Serrano grinds an elbow into Potter's temple. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Serrano lands a decent elbow from side control. Serrano lands a few punches from side control. Potter gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Serrano with good strikes from the mount here! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Serrano cracks Potter with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Potter is rocked! Potter looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Serrano is landing with some decent strikes but Potter is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Potter is still in real trouble! Can Serrano finish him? This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Serrano cracks Potter with a big head shot that has him covering up instantly! He's rolled onto his side and the referee has seen enough - this one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Lawson Serrano! Lawson Serrano retains his middleweight title! Lawson Serrano was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
