PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jay Meadows (ranked 5120 p4p, 4431 weight class) and Devon Merchant (ranked 507 p4p, 470 weight class). Merchant is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by HonestKey- Pass. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jay Meadows!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Devon Merchant!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Steve Smith and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Meadows looks to land a combination. Merchant sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Meadows lands a glancing blow to the side of Merchant's head.
Meadows is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Merchant.
Meadows throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Merchant counters with a nice double leg into side control. Meadows won't be happy with that.
Meadows is in a bad spot here and he knows it... just holding on for now.
Meadows sneaks back into half guard.
Merchant tries to pass the half guard into mount. Meadows knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Meadows throws out a loose jab but Merchant uses good head movement to avoid it.
Merchant drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Meadows defends it well.
Meadows looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Meadows takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Donk. Meadows catches Merchant right on the button with a cross.
Meadows fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

A looping hook to the body misses from Merchant. Meadows does a little dance to reset his feet.
Merchant takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

The crowd cheers as Merchant lands an impressive looking overhand right. Meadows doesn't seem phased though.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Meadows lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Merchant has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Merchant and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Merchant stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Meadows swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Merchant looking to sit in guard and control but Meadows gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Merchant is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Let's hope that Merchant has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Merchant wants to hit a sweep here but Meadows passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Merchant there!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jay Meadows will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Meadows connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Merchant throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Meadows has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Merchant finds it's way round the side to connect with Meadows's head.
Merchant comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Merchant wants to lay and pray for a moment but Meadows keeps working.
Devon Merchant has got the better of the ground game so far.
Merchant tries to score with some ground and pound. Meadows controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Merchant lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Meadows hang on?

It looks like Jay Meadows has been cut.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Meadows takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Merchant's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.
