This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Maxim Ward! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 20 wins and 28 losses; Nuri Jafar! The judges for this bout are Percy O'Donnell, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Jafar tries to close the distance and clinch but Ward swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Ward pushes Jafar up against the cage in a clinch. Ward gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Jafar regains guard.

Ward has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Ward won't allow Jafar to sweep him here. Ward controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ward tries to free his leg and advance position but Jafar is retaining full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ward controls the pace of the fight for a moment. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ward looking to pass the guard. Jafar wants to sweep but no luck. Ward pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Jafar is keeping the position for now. Jafar told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet. Jafar looking for subs off his back but Ward has passed one foot through into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Ward seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Jafar for as long as he can get away with.

That's five minutes gone in the round. Jafar wants to control but Ward postures up. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ward is staying tight to Jafar's torso, preventing him from escaping.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Ward goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Jafar has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Ward but great work by Jafar. Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: Ward (5) vs (4) Jafar Jafar wants to control but Ward is keeping him busy. Ward manages to get back to half guard. Jafar wants to control but Ward is keeping him busy. Ward is doing well to control the position and prevent Jafar from advancing to side control. Ward is looking for a sweep. Jafar is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Jafar passes to full mount! That's seven minutes gone in the round. Jafar might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Ward haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Ward tries to hold on but Jafar postures up. Ward gets back to half guard. Ward is positioning himself well to prevent Jafar advancing to mount. Ward trying to hold on to Jafar's head to control him but Jafar postures up.
Ward regains full guard. Nicely done. Jafar trying to control the position from guard on top but Ward is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Ward is adopting a defensive guard. Jafar trying to control but Ward is working from the bottom. Ward bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Jafar's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Ward (7) vs (7) Jafar Ward controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Ward has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Jafar working for a triangle but Ward defends it easily.

That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Ward slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Score +3 for passing guard: Ward (10) vs (7) Jafar Ward tries to move into full mount but can't pass Jafar's legs. You can see the frustration on Jafar's face as Ward controls the position.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Jafar tries to bench press Ward off him but Ward keeps the position. Ward taking a breather here. Ward gets to mount! Jafar was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly. Score +2 for reaching mount: Ward (12) vs (7) Jafar Ward has control of Jafar's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Jafar regains control of the situation pretty easily.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Ward controlling from the full mount. Ward pushing the pace here, looking to move to his opponents back and work for a finish.

That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Jafar is trying to escape the mount but Ward keeps good control and instead manages to take Jafar's back.
Score +3 for taking back: Ward (15) vs (7) Jafar Ward is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Jafar knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Jafar for a finish. Jafar is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Ward.

And that's the end of the fight! Ward takes the fight on points by 15 to 7. A very excited looking Maxim Ward rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed. The defeated Nuri Jafar had this to say: 'He did not follow the script'. |
