This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 3 wins and 4 losses; Dan Catara! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 3 wins and 2 losses; Shen Po! The judges for this bout are Darius Henderson, Skip Squint and Topper Green.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Po tries to keep at a distance but Catara has taken the fight into the clinch. Po is trying to trip Catara. He has hold of a leg but Catara is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Po persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Catara (0) vs (2) Po Catara is pulling down on Po's head to control his posture. Po content to stall in guard here. Catara looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Po sitting in guard here, content to control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Catara throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Po escapes and throws Catara's legs to the side, diving into side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Catara (7) vs (7) Po Catara is looking to regain half guard here but Po keeps moving and retains side control. Po is looking to take a break and control but Catara is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Po just content to control the position. Catara is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Catara is not content to let Po control the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Po happy to just control the position for now. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Let's hope that Po has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Catara regains half guard there - taking advantage of Po's attempt to lay and pray for a moment. Po moves nicely into side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Catara (7) vs (10) Po

My spies in HELLCADEMY inform me that Po has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Catara is looking to regain half guard here but Po keeps moving and retains side control. Catara is working hard here to advance position. Po is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Catara knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Catara is trying to escape the position but Po is controlling the position.

That's eight minutes gone in the round. It looks like Po might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Po trying to control the action but Catara is working from the bottom. You can see the frustration on Catara's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Po is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Catara has escaped the position, nice work there. Po just content to control the position. Po's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Catara tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Po wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Po is trying to get an arm triangle but Catara is defending well. Po working away. Catara tries to get back to half guard but can't. Catara can't do much from the bottom here.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Catara tries to bench press Po off him but Po keeps the position. Po wants to lay and pray for a moment but Catara keeps working. Po takes a little break here. Catara wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Catara is looking for a sweep. God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Catara is looking to reverse the position.
And that's the end of the fight! Po wins on points by 13 to 7. Shen Po bigged himself up after the win. The crowd seemed to love it. The defeated Dan Catara had this to say: 'Should have won this one...'. |
