The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Scott fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Rodriquez to the ground. Scott is now in Rodriquez's guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Rodriquez (0) vs (2) Scott Rodriquez managing to control the position. Scott content to stall in guard here. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rodriquez looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Rodriquez has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Rodriquez has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Rodriquez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Scott's corner is telling him to maintain position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rodriquez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Scott is one step ahead there. Scott controlling from the top position. Rodriquez has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Scott has passed into side control.

That's six minutes gone in the round. Rodriquez is trying to improve his position. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Scott working away. Rodriquez seems a little lost for a moment, as Scott dominates the positioning. Rodriquez is trying to get back to half guard. Scott staying calm. Rodriquez gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Scott's corner is telling him to maintain position. Rodriquez wants to sweep but no luck. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Scott is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Rodriquez.
