This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 59 wins and 77 losses; Boris Balkan! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 72 wins and 49 losses; Vasiliy Kulik! The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, William Gold and Phil Schofield.
Let's get this grappling contest under way! Who will be victorious? Balkan gets a double leg takedown into Kulik's guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Balkan (2) vs (0) Kulik Kulik seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Balkan looking to sit in guard and control but Kulik gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Balkan (2) vs (2) Kulik Balkan wants to control but Kulik passes easily into half guard.
Balkan is looking to control Kulik's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Balkan avoid being mounted? We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Balkan looking for submissions off his back. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Balkan is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kulik content to control rather than advance. Balkan trying to hold on to Kulik's head to control him but Kulik postures up.
Kulik has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at KFA. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kulik with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Kulik passes to side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Balkan (2) vs (5) Kulik Balkan is trying to improve his position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Balkan is trying to work for a sweep but Kulik has mounted him! Score +2 for reaching mount: Balkan (2) vs (7) Kulik Balkan tries to hold on but Kulik pushes him away. Balkan keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kulik controlling from the full mount. Let's hope that Kulik has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Balkan wants to control but Kulik is having none of it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kulik controlling from the full mount. Kulik avoids the attempt from Balkan to control. Balkan keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Balkan sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Kulik prevents Balkan from improving his position. Balkan is refusing to be controlled, as Kulik sits in half guard. Balkan trying to hold on to Kulik's head to control him but Kulik postures up.
Kulik looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Balkan has his hands clasped together around Kulik's back. He's all about the action. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Kulik wants to control but Balkan is keeping him busy. Balkan actively working from the bottom here. Kulik sitting and controlling from the half guard. Kulik is looking to advance position but Balkan won't allow it. Kulik is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. The fighters are battling for position here. Balkan manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Kulik trying to control but Balkan is working from the bottom. Balkan is trying to keep Kulik in close.
Kulik won't allow Balkan to sweep him here.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Balkan controls Kulik momentarily but Kulik frees himself. Balkan is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Kulik has his hands clasped together but Balkan extends and breaks Kulik's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Balkan.
