The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Abner rushes Hughes and pushes him back against the ropes in a clinch. Abner has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Hughes clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Hughes (0) vs (4) Abner Hughes has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. I would not like to be Hughes right now.
Abner is trying to stick to Hughes's back but Hughes is turning into Abner. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Abner's guard. Hughes advances to half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hughes is working for a submission of some sort.
Abner has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hughes is working away from the top position though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hughes is trying to control the action in half guard but Abner is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Abner wants to control but Hughes is keeping busy and won't allow it. Abner keeping control of the position. Hughes wants to free his trapped foot but Abner is holding on for dear life with his legs. Abner felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Hughes wants to control but Abner is keeping him busy. Abner wants to get back to full guard. Abner moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Abner pulls Hughes in close to his closed guard and prevents Hughes from doing any damage or advancing position. Abner is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Abner looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Hughes pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Abner is keeping the position for now. Hughes trying to control but Abner is working from the bottom. Hughes might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Abner not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Abner keeping moving, preventing Hughes from controlling successfully. Abner looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Abner keeping full guard, as Hughes tries to pass. Abner wants to sweep but no luck. Abner lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Hughes (2) vs (6) Abner Abner trying to control the position from guard on top but Hughes is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Hughes looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Abner really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hughes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Hughes keeping moving, preventing Abner from controlling successfully.

Hughes makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Hughes. Hughes is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Hughes seems keen to control Abner's posture. Hughes working for a triangle but Abner defends it easily.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Hughes keeping full guard, as Abner tries to pass.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Abner wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving. Hughes is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Abner is posturing up here but Hughes has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Abner tries to roll out but it's too tight and Abner has to tap! Slick submission there by Hughes!
