PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Taurino Quiroga (ranked 3107 p4p, 1824 weight class) and Ralph Cifaretto (ranked 344 p4p, 225 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Taurino Quiroga!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ralph Cifaretto!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, William Gold and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Quiroga instigates a clinch.

Quiroga is fighting off a takedown attempt but Cifaretto is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Quiroga to the mat. Quiroga regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Quiroga pulls Cifaretto in close to prevent any damage.
Quiroga keeping moving, preventing Cifaretto from controlling successfully.
Cifaretto pushing down on Quiroga's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Cifaretto is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Quiroga reverses the position - he's now on top in Cifaretto's guard.

Cifaretto looking for a guillotine here but Quiroga defends easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cifaretto had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Quiroga defends it easily.

Cifaretto looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Quiroga is stalling in the full guard.

Cifaretto is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Quiroga wants to pass the guard but Cifaretto is keeping the position.

Cifaretto isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Quiroga stacks Cifaretto on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Quiroga!

Quiroga is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Cifaretto will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Cifaretto is looking for a sweep.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Cifaretto shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Cifaretto throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Quiroga is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Cifaretto is trying to work for a kimura but Quiroga is defending well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Cifaretto shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Cifaretto was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Cifaretto is looking to take a break and control but Quiroga is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Cifaretto sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Quiroga is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Cifaretto has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Cifaretto swings around for an armbar but Quiroga sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Cifaretto's guard.

Cifaretto is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Quiroga has taken his back.

The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Quiroga's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Quiroga controlling the position well here. Cifaretto rolled but Quiroga kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
Ralph Cifaretto has got the better of the ground game so far.
Cifaretto is really stuck here.
Cifaretto breaks Quiroga's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

That was a close second round but I would say that Taurino Quiroga will probably get the nod.

Quiroga has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Cifaretto felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Quiroga takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Cifaretto is trying to reverse the position but instead Quiroga has taken his back - oops!
