PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Josue Luna (ranked 2404 p4p, 3000 weight class) and Joe Patterson (ranked 249 p4p, 312 weight class). Joe Patterson will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Josue Luna!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Joe Patterson!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Peter Branson and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Luna tries for a takedown but Patterson circles away easily
and Patterson counters with a stiff right hand.
Patterson scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Patterson showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Luna.
Patterson looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Luna walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Patterson misses the jab.
Patterson pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Luna back to the cage. Patterson follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Luna drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Luna tries to clinch up.
Patterson has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.

Luna closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Luna advances to full mount.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Patterson can do anything to dispel that myth.

Luna goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Patterson is on top in guard.

Luna is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Patterson throws an elbow that misses. Luna uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Patterson's guard. Nice move by Luna!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Patterson tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Patterson pulls Luna in close to his closed guard and prevents Luna from doing any damage or advancing position.
Luna trying to control but Patterson is working from the bottom.
Patterson has Luna pulled in close to control his posture.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

letting Patterson counter with a right hand.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Patterson throws a hook but Luna blocks it.
Luna drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Luna takes a swing at Patterson's ribcage but misses.
A low kick from Luna is predictable there
enabling Patterson to counter with a crisp jab.
Patterson's corner calls for a 1-2. Patterson obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Patterson throws a low kick, looking for Luna's leg but Luna calmly moves out of range.
Patterson throws a lazy right hand but Luna sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Patterson dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Patterson lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Luna uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Patterson.
Patterson thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Luna if he has to take too many more of those.
Josue Luna is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Patterson lands a jab.
Luna looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Patterson is fending him off so far but Luna persists. Nope, Patterson circles away and we're back to standing.
Patterson throws a leg kick but Luna checks it.
Patterson lands with a nice body punch.
Patterson keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Patterson has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Patterson buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Luna throws a lazy head kick
and Patterson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Luna throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Patterson tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Luna is in Patterson's guard.

Patterson pushes Luna off and scrambles back to his feet.

Luna sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Patterson lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Luna has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Luna and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Luna takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Luna looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Patterson is fending him off so far but Luna persists. Nope, Patterson circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Josue Luna. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Patterson lands with an uppercut that bounces Luna off the cage and back into range.
Luna doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Luna's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Patterson connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Luna scrambles back to his feet.

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Patterson.

Luna takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Luna takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Luna shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Patterson defends it nicely.

Luna looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

Luna instigates a clinch.
Luna has Patterson pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Patterson manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Patterson is pushing Luna up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Joe Patterson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Luna's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Luna misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Patterson thuds his right hand into Luna's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Patterson shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Luna eats them both and turns towards Patterson to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Luna has Patterson up against the cage in a clinch.
Luna can't get the takedown.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Patterson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Luna tries to clinch but Patterson moves out of range.
Patterson throws a low kick but Luna avoids it.
Patterson lands a leg kick that knocks Luna off balance momentarily.
Luna throws a nice looking combination but Patterson bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Luna closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Patterson trying to control but Luna flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!
Luna is not going to allow Patterson to sit and survive in this position.
Patterson might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Luna haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Patterson is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Luna.

Luna working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Patterson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Luna. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Luna is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Luna gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Luna gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Luna apologises and we restart here on the feet.
Luna gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Luna shoots in looking for a takedown but Patterson manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Luna's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Patterson will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

and Patterson counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

Luna takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Luna misses with a combination
and Patterson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Luna with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Patterson to score with a decent uppercut.

Joe Patterson decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
