Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jarkko Hakulinen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Taro Takaoka and Sosuke Kotani.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hakulinen fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Staples is out of range.
Hakulinen darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Staples on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Hakulinen is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Staples is just riding it out for now. Hakulinen eventually gives up the hold.
Hakulinen is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Staples defends it well.
Staples makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Staples.

Hakulinen trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Staples tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hakulinen trying to control the position from guard on top but Staples is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Hakulinen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Hakulinen is pushing down on Staples's leg trying to pass to half guard. Staples is fighting to maintain full guard but Hakulinen has managed to sneak the leg through.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

so Hakulinen counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Hakulinen throwing strikes but missing.
Hakulinen stands and throws Staples's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Staples manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Staples wants to get back to full guard.
Hakulinen is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

That's time! Hakulinen's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Staples feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Staples pushes down on Hakulinen's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Hakulinen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Staples unloads with some shots from mount but Hakulinen bucks and avoids them well.

Staples trying to control but Hakulinen is having none of it.

Hakulinen manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Staples manages to get himself to full guard.

Hakulinen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Staples swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Staples utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Staples working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hakulinen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Staples is tightening it up a little... Hakulinen has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Hakulinen reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Hakulinen taps out! nice BJJ there by Staples!
