PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mate Magyar (ranked 2792 p4p, 3334 weight class) and Benjamin Catch (ranked 286 p4p, 335 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Mate Magyar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Benjamin Catch!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Alexandre Firmino and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Catch shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Magyar sprawls well. Magyar wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Catch gets slowly back to his feet.
Magyar fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Catch stuffs the takedown.
Magyar shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Catch as he avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mate Magyar. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Catch decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Magyar is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Magyar is looking to control Catch's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Magyar avoid being mounted?
Catch throws a strike but Magyar avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Catch is fighting to break Magyar's control of his arms but Magyar is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Magyar is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Magyar fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Magyar shoots in and drives through. Catch sprawls well.

Magyar bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Magyar cracks Catch with an elbow. That is naaassty.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Catch can do anything to dispel that myth.
Magyar misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Catch takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Magyar trying to control the action but Catch is working from the bottom.
Magyar looks up at the clock and then as Catch takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Magyar smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Magyar scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Catch to see if he's OK.
Magyar in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Catch tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Magyar wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Catch felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Catch manages to get back to half guard.
Magyar is nestled in close to Catch, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Catch tries to roll over but Magyar keeps him under control.
Magyar is trying to control the action in half guard but Catch is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Magyar has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Magyar thows a huge punch but Catch dodges it nicely.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Catch shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Magyar as he avoids it easily.

Magyar fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Catch to the ground. Magyar is now in Catch's guard.
Catch really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Magyar. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Magyar stays in close to Catch's body and controls the position.
Magyar is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Magyar accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Magyar wants to control from the top but Catch keeps moving.
Magyar stands and throws Catch's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Magyar is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Catch has escaped the position, nice work there.

Catch is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Catch is staying active underneath Magyar, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Magyar drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Catch manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Magyar has Catch in his guard.

Catch wants to control from the top but Magyar keeps moving.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Magyar looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Catch feints the counter takedown.
Magyar shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Catch pinned against the cage. Catch gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Magyar is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Catch can do to turn this around?
Magyar goes for a double leg but Catch avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Catch continues to drive forward.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mate Magyar. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Magyar gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Catch regains guard.

Magyar looking to sit in guard and control but Catch gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Magyar controls Catch momentarily but Catch frees himself.
Magyar wants to sweep but no luck.
Magyar is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Catch is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Catch throws an elbow that misses. Magyar uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Catch's guard. Nice move by Magyar!

Catch looking to hit a scissor sweep but Magyar is one step ahead there.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mate Magyar will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Magyar throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Catch's waist but Catch gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Magyar off to one side.
Magyar tries to score a power double leg takedown but Catch sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Magyar somewhat.
Catch shoots in looking for a takedown. Magyar tries to sprawl out of it but Catch keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Magyar manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Magyar appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Magyar shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Catch's guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Magyar connects with a nice short shot to Catch's temple.
Catch gets back to full guard.

You can see the frustration on Catch's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Catch seems a little lost for a moment, as Magyar dominates the positioning.

Mate Magyar is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Magyar connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Catch some visible discomfort.
Mate Magyar overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Magyar has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Magyar breaks from Catch's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Catch is desperately trying to improve his position but Magyar has a good base and remains in mount.

Magyar can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Catch is looking to escape.
Magyar tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Catch tries to hold on but Magyar pushes him away.

Magyar seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Catch for as long as he can get away with.
Catch is looking to get to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Magyar trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Benjamin Catch has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Magyar, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
