PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mordecai Brown (ranked 4098 p4p, 4241 weight class) and Kaori Suzuki (ranked 389 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mordecai Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kaori Suzuki!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brown tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Suzuki was well out of range. Poor timing from Brown.
Brown shoots and misses
and Suzuki counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Brown walks into a left hand.
Brown darts in looking for a takedown but Suzuki gets double underhooks and turns Brown into the cage.
Brown is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mordecai Brown. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Brown breaks the clinch.
Brown gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Suzuki counters with a stiff right hand.
Suzuki paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Brown with a poor takedown
and Suzuki counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Brown takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Brown fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Brown looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Suzuki is fending him off so far but Brown persists. Nope, Suzuki circles away and we're back to standing.

Brown forces Suzuki back against the cage and clinches.

Brown manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Suzuki trying to control the position from guard on top but Brown is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Brown has his foot on Suzuki's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Suzuki works his way back into a safe position though.
Suzuki trying to stand up but can't free himself from Brown's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Suzuki is looking to pass into half guard but Brown pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Brown is in guard.

Suzuki working a defensive guard here.
Brown not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Brown seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Suzuki for as long as he can get away with.

Suzuki is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Brown defends well.
Brown controlling from the top position.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Brown has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Nice uppercut lands for Suzuki. That snapped Brown's head back.
Suzuki keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Suzuki scores with a punch to the head.
Suzuki misses with a double jab.
Brown misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Brown.
Kaori Suzuki is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Suzuki swings widly with a right hand

and Brown moves into the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A hook to the body from Brown.

Brown decides to pull guard.
Brown trying to strike off his back.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Kaori Suzuki dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Suzuki swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Brown darts in looking for a takedown but Suzuki gets double underhooks and turns Brown into the cage.
Suzuki tries to break free but Brown pushes him back against the cage.
Brown has Suzuki pressed against the cage, preventing Suzuki from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Suzuki wants to get back to striking at distance but Brown won't allow it.

Brown pulls guard successfully.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Brown is on top in guard.

Brown's corner is telling him to maintain position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Brown got a little sloppy there for a moment and Suzuki has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Brown has managed to get both his arms back between Suzuki's legs - danger averted.

Suzuki escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Brown gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Brown gets to his feet. Suzuki looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Suzuki fails to land with a series of punches.
Brown connects with a high kick.
Brown doesn't succeed with the takedown
letting Suzuki counter with a right hand.
Suzuki's corner calls for a 1-2. Suzuki obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Brown closes the distance and clinches.
Suzuki is looking to control Brown's arms but Brown gets an underhook and turns him. Now Suzuki has his back to the cage.
Suzuki stops a takedown attempt from Brown.

Brown pulls guard effortlessly.
Brown lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Brown landing with the ground and pound.
Suzuki can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Brown controls the pace.
Brown postures up.

Brown stands up and waves to Suzuki to follow him.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
No luck for Brown with that takedown attempt.
Brown tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Suzuki swivels and escapes.
Suzuki swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.

Suzuki throws a looping overhand right but Brown ducks down to avoid it.
Nice defenses there by Brown.
Suzuki loads up on a big right hand but Brown slips the punch.
Suzuki might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Suzuki stuffs the takedown.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Suzuki connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Suzuki is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Suzuki misses with a low kick.
Brown tries for a takedown but Suzuki circles away easily
and Suzuki counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Kaori Suzuki seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Suzuki connects with the punch.
Suzuki connects with a good right hand that stumbles Brown. Brown circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Suzuki!
Brown is trying hard to land a takedown here. Suzuki sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Suzuki throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Brown drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Brown takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.

Brown is rocked!
Suzuki paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Oh Brown is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Brown is defended easily by Suzuki.

Brown closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Kaori Suzuki showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Brown seems to have got his legs back now.
Nice sprawl there from Suzuki as Brown shoots in.
Suzuki looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Brown takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Suzuki moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Brown looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

Brown takes the fight into the clinch.

Suzuki must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Brown had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Suzuki defends it easily.
Suzuki wants to stand but Brown is controlling his posture from full guard.

Suzuki lying in Brown's guard like a wet fish here, stalling away. Brown decides he's had enough of all that nonsense - he escapes his hips and locks up an armbar! Wow, that was slick! Suzuki taps! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Mordecai Brown!
