PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mason Lesnar (ranked 2878 p4p, 2617 weight class) and Denise Kormier (ranked 231 p4p, 215 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mason Lesnar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Denise Kormier!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Shigeki Sano and Yukihiro Shimada.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kormier has taken the fight to the clinch.
Kormier working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
Lesnar has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Kormier after a bit of a struggle.
Lesnar is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Kormier pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Kormier has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Lesnar avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Lesnar gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Kormier has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Lesnar is proving hard to escape from.

Lesnar definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Kormier wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lesnar keeps working.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Lesnar is looking to improve his position.
Lesnar is not content to let Kormier control the position.
Lesnar won't allow Kormier to pass to mount.

Lesnar is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Lesnar misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Lesnar avoids the head kick by Kormier.
Lesnar dodges the punch combination from Kormier.
Lesnar circles away from the clinch attempt.
We've been informed that Kormier has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Kormier misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Kormier pushes Lesnar up against the cage in a clinch.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Lesnar connects with a couple of short punches.
Kormier manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Lesnar manages to get himself to full guard.

Lesnar pulls Kormier in close to prevent any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kormier has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Lesnar is proving hard to escape from.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kormier wants to control from the top but Lesnar keeps moving.

Denise Kormier dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Kormier looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Lesnar is fending him off so far but Kormier persists. Nope, Lesnar circles away and we're back to standing.
Lesnar seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Kormier looks to score with a jab to the body but Lesnar is just out of range.
Lesnar leaves Kormier with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kormier tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Horrible takedown attempt by Kormier or perhaps it was just good defense by Lesnar, which made it look bad.
Lesnar tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Kormier manages to circle out of the way.
Mason Lesnar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Denise Kormier.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lesnar throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Kormier doesn't manage to clinch there - Lesnar circles away.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Lesnar managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Kormier.
Lesnar tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kormier wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lesnar defending against the ground and pound.

Denise Kormier has got the better of the ground game so far.

Kormier is working to tighten his grip on Lesnar's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Lesnar has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Kormier is really squeezing tight and eventually Lesnar passes out! Kormier breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Mason Lesnar was interviewed post fight and said 'I might have lost the fight tonight, but damn with a mullet like this how could I ever lose in life.'.
