HC GRAP 24 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 5 losses; Woodie Maykit! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 5 wins and 4 losses; Sambo Sam! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Percy O'Donnell.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Maykit shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Sam is trying to defend but Maykit finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Maykit (2) vs (0) Sam Sam is in trouble now - Maykit has advanced to mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Maykit (5) vs (0) Sam The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Maykit is looking to work his way around to Sam's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position. Sam tries to hold on but Maykit pushes him away. Maykit definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. That's six minutes gone in the round. Maykit might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Maykit has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Further stalling from Maykit. Sam trying to control but Maykit is working from the bottom.

Maykit pulls Sam in to control the position. Sam pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Maykit is keeping the position for now. Maykit trying to control the position.
Sam trying to control the position from guard on top but Maykit is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Maykit is trying to control the position but Sam postures up. Maykit is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Maykit escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sam gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Maykit has control of Sam's left arm, preventing Sam from doing any damage. Sam wants to pass the guard but Maykit is keeping the position. Sam is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Maykit is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Sam trying to control but Maykit is working from the bottom. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Maykit holds on and takes a little breather.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Maykit keeping full guard, as Sam tries to pass. Maykit keeping moving, preventing Sam from controlling successfully. Maykit controls Sam momentarily but Sam frees himself. Maykit is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Maykit working a defensive guard but Sam passes into half guard.
Sam is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Sam is thwarting Maykit's attempts to control the position. Sam is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Maykit sees it coming and defends easily. Maykit wants to improve his position but Sam is controlling well.

That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Maykit has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Sam is working away from the top position though. Maykit tries to get to full guard but Sam has control of the leg. Maykit is trying to maintain the position but Sam is very close to passing his half guard. Sam wants to lay and pray for a moment but Maykit keeps working. Sam is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Maykit is just riding it out for now. Sam eventually gives up the hold. Maykit makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Maykit.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Maykit has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Sam trying to control but Maykit is working from the bottom. Maykit wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Sam advances to half guard. Sam is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Maykit defends it well. Maykit is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sam's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sam's back! Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: Maykit (15) vs (2) Sam Good control from Maykit. Maykit looking for the choke but no joy.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Maykit keeps control of the position easily here as Sam tries to buck him off.
