PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Scott Potter (ranked 836 p4p, 632 weight class) and Marques Roy (ranked 112 p4p, 87 weight class). Marques Roy told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Scott Potter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Marques Roy!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Michael Johnstone and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roy misses with a body shot.
We've been told by Potter's head coaches at Freaky Fight Club that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Roy uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Potter.
Roy tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Potter swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Roy avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Roy is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Potter misses with a lunging right hand

and Roy counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Roy stands up over Potter, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Roy is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Potter wants to stand up but Roy is controlling him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Potter on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Potter tries to get out of the position.

Potter pushes Roy off looking to stand but Roy dives back in and keeps control.

Roy is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Potter tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Roy manages to move to mount!
Roy fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Potter wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

BOOM! Roy connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Roy cracks Potter with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Potter is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

The referee warns Potter that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Potter squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Roy connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Potter's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Roy tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Potter defends well and Roy ends up having to push Potter into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Roy takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Scott Potter has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marques Roy.

Roy shoots in looking for a takedown. Potter tries to sprawl out of it but Roy keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Potter manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Roy shoots for a double leg takedown but Potter sprawls well. He's pushed Roy's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
It looked like Potter was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Potter scores with the left hand. Roy knows he should have avoided that one.

Roy's coach down at Freaky Fight Club was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Roy's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Roy shoots in but Potter avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Roy drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Potter defends it well.

Potter lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
No luck for Roy with that takedown attempt.
Roy closes the distance and clinches up with Potter, looking for a takedown. Roy pushes Potter against the cage but Potter circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Potter misses the jab.
Potter connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
