The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fernando gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Fernando moves in looking to clinch but Thornton pushes him off.

Fernando is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Thornton misses with a straight right.
Fernando fails in his attempt to clinch.
Thornton is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Fernando.
Fernando tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Thornton manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

A short body shot lands from Thornton as the two fighters clinch.

Fernando gets control of Thornton's arms and successfully pulls guard. Fernando will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Fernando had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Thornton defends it easily.

Fernando working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Thornton doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Thornton manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Fernando is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Thornton is aware though and is defending well.
Thornton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Fernando swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Thornton got a little sloppy there for a moment and Fernando has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Thornton has managed to get both his arms back between Fernando's legs - danger averted.

Fernando has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Thornton doesn't defend quickly enough and Fernando has managed to lock this one up! Can Thornton escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Fernando on a fantastic submission victory.
