PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Darryl Gray (ranked 3849 p4p, 4140 weight class) and Heyward Rutledge (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Darryl Gray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Heyward Rutledge!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Steven Brown and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gray with a lazy takedown attempt
and Rutledge counters with a nice uppercut.
Gray shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Rutledge leaves Gray with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
It seemed like Rutledge was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darryl Gray. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gray fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Rutledge avoids it really well and circles away.
A little jabbing left from Rutledge on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rutledge defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Gray.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Rutledge! But no joy.
Gray tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Rutledge defends well and Gray ends up having to push Rutledge into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
A nice side step and Rutledge releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Gray has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Rutledge avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Gray digs a right hand underneath Rutledge's ribcage. Rutledge let out a lung full of air as it connected.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Gray.
Rutledge will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Gray up against the cage.
Gray fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Rutledge gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Gray moves into full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Gray looking for a triangle here. Rutledge is fighting it but it looks tight! Gray pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Rutledge is tapping out - this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:20 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Darryl Gray!
Heyward Rutledge spoke after the fight, saying '6 of 15 learning speed. 2.1-3.5 with 2.7 2.8 is middle of that.'.
