And in the blue corner, fighting out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 9 wins and 6 losses; Carl McDonald Jr! The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Daniel Franklin and Gwen Towbar.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Gordon bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Gordon (4) vs (0) McDonald Jr McDonald Jr is trying to improve his position. Gordon controlling from side mount. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gordon seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down McDonald Jr for as long as he can get away with. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. McDonald Jr manages to get back to half guard. McDonald Jr is looking to improve his position.
Gordon looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gordon's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. McDonald Jr regains full guard. Nicely done. McDonald Jr is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
McDonald Jr is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Gordon (4) vs (2) McDonald Jr Gordon wants to improve his position but McDonald Jr is controlling well.
Gordon works his way to full guard. Good work. McDonald Jr pushing down on Gordon's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Gordon trying to get back to full guard but McDonald Jr takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Gordon (4) vs (5) McDonald Jr
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gordon tries to lock up and control but McDonald Jr gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Gordon is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control. Gordon looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Gordon tries to control McDonald Jr's body but McDonald Jr pushes him off. Gordon squirms to his side and now McDonald Jr has his back! Score +3 for taking back: Gordon (4) vs (8) McDonald Jr Gordon knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for McDonald Jr on the ground. Gordon's corner are yelling at him, telling him to just focus on controlling McDonald Jr's hands. Gordon trying to control the position but McDonald Jr manages to sink in the hooks. McDonald Jr working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Gordon is doing well to defend. McDonald Jr seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Gordon is forced to tap and this one is over!
