PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Merlin Bando (ranked 4075 p4p, 4227 weight class) and Boom Bar (ranked 427 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Merlin Bando!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Boom Bar!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Josh West and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Bando looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Bar manages to get to full guard.
Bando trying to control but Bar is working from the bottom.
Bar pulls Bando in close to prevent any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bar wants to sweep here but Bando controlling him for the moment.

Bar is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Bar is working for a kimura but Bando is defending it quite comfortably.
Bando on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Bando tries to get out of the position.

Bando has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Bar is working away from the top position though.

Bar throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Bando has a hand on Bar's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Bar takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Bando is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Bar content just to control the position here.
Bando knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Bar on the ground.

Bar jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Bando is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Bando and Bar has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Bar is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Bando has escaped the position, nice work there.
Bando is trying to escape the position but Bar is controlling the position.

Bar is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Bando knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Bar slows the pace down.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Boom Bar dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Bar drives through with a takedown into Bando's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Bando tries to clinch but Bar is having none of it.
Bar throws out a counter right but Bando avoids it with no problem.
Bar tries a head kick but it misses.

Bar moves into range and clinches up with Bando.

Bando on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Bando has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Bar avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Merlin Bando. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bando wants to stall.
Bando tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Bar just stands there and leans against the cage.

Bando breaks the clinch.

Bar closes the distance and pushes Bando back into the cage.
Bar lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Bando backwards.
Bar is trying to break free.
Bando is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Bar seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Bando is trying to maintain the position but Bar is very close to passing his half guard.

Bar has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Bar has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Bando looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Bar is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Bar working for a choke but Bando is defending well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Bando is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Bar.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Boom Bar showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Bar misses with a two punch combination.

Bar gets caught napping as Bando dives in and scores a takedown. Bar manages to retain guard.

Bar has his feet on Bando's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Bar shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Bar drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Bar jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Bando has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Bar is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Bando.

You can see the frustration on Bando's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Bando is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Bar lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Bar.

Bando is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

Bando reaches up to try and control the position but Bar seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Bando rolls and tries to escape and now Bar has his back!

Bar is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Bando knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Bando for a finish.

Bando is looking to stand back up. He's having to work hard to escape but eventually he manages it.
Merlin Bando has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Bar rushes Bando and presses him up against the cage.
Boom Bar is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Bando has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Bar uses from the top position.

Boom Bar comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Bar has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
