PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dan Guti (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marshal Van Black (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dan Guti!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Marshal Van Black!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Damien Edna and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Van Black throws a big overhand right that connects, sending Guti tumbling to the canvas!


It looks like Dan Guti has been cut.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Guti working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Van Black doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Van Black manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Van Black working some strikes from top position.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Van Black's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Guti looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Van Black throws a strike but Guti rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Van Black escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Guti gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Guti trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Guti slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Van Black tries to buck Guti off but Guti is having none of it.

Guti wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Van Black, who protects the arm well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Van Black throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.

Guti is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Van Black knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Guti is breathing heavily.
Van Black misses with an elbow from the bottom.
Van Black is trying to get back to half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Van Black can do anything to dispel that myth.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Guti is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Van Black has escaped the position, nice work there.
Van Black tries to improve position but can't.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Van Black is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Van Black manages to get back to half guard.

Guti is working for a submission of some sort.

Guti prevents Van Black from improving his position.
Van Black flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Van Black is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Guti is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Van Black looks like he's trying to stand up.
Van Black missing with punches from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Van Black closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Guti is looking to reverse the position.
Guti takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Van Black cracks Guti with a big right hand but Guti just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Guti tries to improve position but can't.
Van Black is working Guti over with some ground and pound from side control.
Van Black really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Guti. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Van Black advances to mount.
Guti is wriggling around trying to escape.
Van Black connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Van Black looking to finish Guti with some ground and pound. This is bad for Guti!
Guti tries to reverse the position but Van Black maintains control.
BOOM! Van Black connects with a massive shot to the dome!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Guti regains half guard.
Guti manages to get to full guard.

Guti is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Van Black distracts Guti with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Van Black got a little sloppy there for a moment and Guti has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Van Black has managed to get both his arms back between Guti's legs - danger averted.
Van Black must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Van Black postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Guti looking to hit a scissor sweep but Van Black is one step ahead there.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Van Black's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marshal Van Black dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Dan Guti's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Van Black looks to land a combination. Guti sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

Van Black fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Guti sprawls well initially but Van Black persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Guti is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Van Black trying to mount his opponent but Guti defends it.
Van Black winds up and cracks Guti with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Guti has hold of Van Black's hands but Van Black slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Van Black landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

Van Black looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Guti is pressing down on Van Black's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Guti looking for a sweep. Not yet Guti, not yet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Van Black lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Van Black lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Van Black has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Guti is proving hard to escape from.

Van Black has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Guti to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Van Black is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Guti pulls down on the head and he's put Van Black to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Dan Guti!
