PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Trevin Prince (ranked 2988 p4p, 2026 weight class) and Denise Kormier (ranked 250 p4p, 190 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Trevin Prince!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Denise Kormier!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Vladimir Khabensky and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kormier tries to clinch up but Prince circles away and keeps his distance.
Kormier gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Prince counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Kormier throws a head kick that misses
and Prince counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Trevin Prince seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kormier listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Kormier should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Kormier avoids a punch combination nicely.
Kormier misses with a wild body shot.
Prince scores with a shot to the body.
Prince pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Prince misses with a straight right.
Prince misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Kormier.
Prince throws a series of punches but Kormier moves out of range.
Prince throws a left and a right that both miss

and Kormier counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Prince knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kormier on the ground.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kormier loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Prince will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Kormier is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Kormier lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Prince looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Prince is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kormier loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Kormier slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Kormier looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Prince is fending him off so far but Kormier persists. Nope, Prince circles away and we're back to standing.
Prince misses with a body shot.
Prince throws a jab but it's blocked by Kormier.
Kormier wants to counter with a clinch but Prince pushes him away.
Prince misses with a two punch combination.
Prince throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Prince misses with an uppercut

and Kormier counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Prince!
Kormier has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Kormier tries to move to full mount but Prince actually manages to regain half guard.
Kormier wants to lay and pray for a moment but Prince keeps working.

Kormier performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Kormier wants to control but Prince is keeping him busy.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Kormier wants to clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Prince lands with a shot to the body.
Prince throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
A big left from Prince misses.

Kormier moves into the clinch.

Prince gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Prince wants to take a breather but Kormier is having none of it.
Prince throws a strike but Kormier avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Prince got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kormier has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Prince has managed to get both his arms back between Kormier's legs - danger averted.

Kormier has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Prince can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Prince avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Trevin Prince will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Nice sprawl there from Prince as Kormier shoots in.
Prince defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Kormier.
Prince lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Prince keeps the fight on the outside.
Prince throws a body shot but no joy.

Kormier gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Prince successfully pulls guard.
We've been informed that Kormier has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Kormier trying to stand up but can't free himself from Prince's guard.
Denise Kormier has got the better of the ground game so far.
Prince preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kormier is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Kormier is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Prince on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Prince tries to get out of the position.

Kormier lands a couple of digs.
Kormier wants to control from the top but Prince keeps moving.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Kormier is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Prince works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Kormier wants to stand and escape but Prince is having none of it.

Kormier is trying to control the position but Prince postures up.
Kormier avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Prince wants to control from the top but Kormier keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kormier is on top in guard.

Kormier wants to pass the guard but Prince is keeping the position.
Prince is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Kormier advances to half guard.
Kormier is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Prince!
Prince is squirming around, avoiding Kormier's attempts to control the action.
Kormier thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kormier looking to control but Prince is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Kormier might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Prince haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Prince wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kormier is persistently looking for the submission but Prince is defending it well.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Denise Kormier will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Prince takes a swing at Kormier's ribcage but misses.
Kormier was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.

Kormier darts in and clinches Prince up against the cage.
Kormier is trying to drag Prince to the mat but Prince just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Kormier drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Kormier jumps guard.
Kormier can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Prince controls the pace.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Prince has gone for a leg lock! Kormier slips out almost immediately though and dives into Prince's guard.

Kormier in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kormier trying to control but Prince is working from the bottom.
Kormier stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Prince swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kormier trying to control the position from guard on top but Prince is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Prince wants to sweep but no luck.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Prince is on top in guard.


Kormier had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Prince defends it easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Prince throwing strikes but missing.
Kormier is trying to control the position but Prince postures up.

Kormier is looking for a triangle but Prince pushes his legs off easily.
Prince wants to control from the top but Kormier keeps moving.
Kormier keeping full guard, as Prince tries to pass.
Prince trying to control but Kormier is working from the bottom.
Kormier working a defensive guard here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Prince content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Kormier has locked up a guillotine! Kormier's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Prince is holding on here and Kormier must be using up a lot of energy. Prince has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Kormier gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:30 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Denise Kormier!
Denise Kormier got down on his knees post fight and begged the management for a title shot. 'Please, I want that title shot so bad! Give it to me!'
