Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tre Davis (ranked 2816 p4p, 2160 weight class) and Viktor Mertel (ranked 350 p4p, 288 weight class). Mertel is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Mertel Fuck shit up. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tre Davis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Viktor Mertel!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Hirohito Nitta.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mertel throws a right hand that Davis ducks under and follows up with a left that Davis also avoids with ease.
Davis was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Davis wants to clinch up but Mertel keeps it at a distance.
Mertel gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Davis connects with a nasty looking knee right to Mertel's face.
Still in the clinch, Mertel scores with a nice short uppercut.
I was talking to Davis's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Mertel breaks the clinch.
Davis rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Mertel moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Mertel throws a counter combo.
Some wild striking there from Mertel.
Davis fails in his attempt to clinch.
Davis tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Mertel manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Davis lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Mertel pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Mertel throws a series of punches but Davis moves out of range.
Davis throws a nice looking combination but Mertel bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Mertel avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Davis fails with the takedown.
Sloppy strikes from Mertel. Those never looked like landing.

Mertel has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Davis is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Nice uppercut there from Mertel.
Mertel closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Davis throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Mertel blocks it with crossed arms.
Mertel breaks from the clinch.
Davis tries to clinch up
letting Mertel counter with a right hand.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mertel throws a right and a left that Davis avoids nicely.
Davis defending well as Mertel loads up on a big left hand.
Mertel throws a good cross that connects.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Mertel throws a poor cross that misses
and Davis counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Mertel fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Davis, pushing him back against the cage.
Mertel breaks the clinch.
Davis tries to clinch but Mertel moves out of range.
Mertel feints with a jab and clips Davis right behind the ear with a massive overhand right! Davis is sent crashing into the canvas and Mertel leaps in for the kill! Davis tries to get to his feet but Mertel is just battering him from every conceivable angle. The ref decides that Davis is in need of a savior and steps in!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Viktor Mertel!
