PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Silverhand (ranked 4043 p4p, 3488 weight class) and Hiroshi Shigematsu (ranked 0 p4p, 376 weight class). Hiroshi Shigematsu told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Johnny Silverhand!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hiroshi Shigematsu!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Silverhand stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Silverhand wants it to stay on the feet.

Silverhand decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Shigematsu trying to control here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Silverhand lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Silverhand is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shigematsu is looking to improve his position.

Shigematsu misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Silverhand takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Silverhand is keen to just control but Shigematsu is a slippery customer.
Silverhand is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Silverhand wants to pass the guard but Shigematsu is defending well.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Silverhand looks to land a strike but Shigematsu avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Shigematsu not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Shigematsu throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Shigematsu misses with a takedown attempt - Silverhand sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Silverhand tries to keep at a distance but Shigematsu has taken the fight into the clinch.
Shigematsu is looking to take this one to the mat.

Silverhand turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Shigematsu stalks Silverhand and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Silverhand's face. Silverhand staggers backwards, shaken.
Shigematsu lands a nice leg kick that just misses Silverhand's sensitive parts.
Shigematsu misses with a takedown attempt - Silverhand sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Silverhand crunches a lovely knee into Shigematsu's ribcage.
Silverhand jumps guard but Shigematsu stands there with Silverhand around his waist. Silverhand gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Silverhand is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Shigematsu's half guard.

Shigematsu manages to get to full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Shigematsu is on top in guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Silverhand is really struggling to control Shigematsu but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Shigematsu gets to his feet. Silverhand looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Shigematsu's corner calls for a 1-2. Shigematsu obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Johnny Silverhand is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Shigematsu.
Silverhand tries for a takedown but Shigematsu sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

and Shigematsu counters with a series of strikes. Silverhand will be more careful next time no doubt.

Shigematsu closes the distance and clinches up with Silverhand, looking for a takedown. Shigematsu pushes Silverhand against the cage but Silverhand circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Hiroshi Shigematsu showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Shigematsu is trying to pull guard but Silverhand turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Shigematsu breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Silverhand is trying hard to land a takedown here. Shigematsu sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Shigematsu crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Silverhand - the referee stops the clock and Shigematsu gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Silverhand. Shigematsu manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Shigematsu fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Silverhand, pushing him back against the cage.
Silverhand drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johnny Silverhand. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Silverhand has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Shigematsu avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Shigematsu jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Silverhand walks away with a smile on his face. Shigematsu gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Silverhand lands a head shot.

Shigematsu clinches.
Silverhand misses with a punch on the inside.
Silverhand is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Shigematsu is defending well for now.

Silverhand breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Shigematsu lands a nice hook to Silverhand's body. Silverhand takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shigematsu connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Silverhand enables Shigematsu to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Silverhand manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Silverhand on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Silverhand tries to get out of the position.

Silverhand looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Shigematsu has picked Silverhand up and slammed him! Silverhand can't keep hold of the triangle and Shigematsu manages to pass to side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Shigematsu decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Shigematsu looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Silverhand is fending him off so far but Shigematsu persists. Nope, Silverhand circles away and we're back to standing.
Silverhand stuffs the takedown.
Shigematsu tries to close the distance and clinch up but Silverhand swats him away and circles back towards the center.
It looked like Silverhand was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Shigematsu slaps away a takedown attempt from Silverhand, before circling back to the center of the mat.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Silverhand tries to keep at a distance but Shigematsu has taken the fight into the clinch.

Shigematsu pulls guard effortlessly.
Shigematsu not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Silverhand pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Shigematsu is keeping the position for now.
Silverhand wants to control from the top but Shigematsu keeps moving.
Shigematsu is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Silverhand not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Shigematsu fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
Hiroshi Shigematsu comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Shigematsu has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
