PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kenny Mason (ranked 4576 p4p, 25592 weight class) and Nate Robertson (ranked 377 p4p, 431 weight class). Nate Robertson struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 157.8lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Kenny Mason!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nate Robertson!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Cecil Peabody and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mason fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Robertson sprawls well initially but Mason persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Robertson can do anything to dispel that myth.
Robertson looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Mason looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Robertson with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Mason content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Mason seems to be looking for submissions.
Mason is controlling the pace.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mason decides to stand up.
Mason misses with a series of wild punches.
Despite the aggression on Robertson's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Robertson gets caught flat footed, as Mason shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Mason seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mason decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Robertson, up you get!
Mason tries to work over Robertson's front leg with a kick but Robertson checks it.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Mason.
Mason tries a head kick but it misses.

Mason feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Mason is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Mason works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Mason slips a nice elbow through Robertson's hands, connecting with Robertson's forehead.

Mason wants to get back to his feet.

Mason is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Mason is nestled in close to Robertson, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mason tries to pass the half guard into mount. Robertson knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Mason closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Robertson quickly recovers to half guard.
Robertson wants to sweep but Mason has passed to side control!
Mason advances to full mount.
Mason lands a nice shot to the head.

Robertson is breathing heavily.
Mason takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Mason stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Mason looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Mason is in close to Robertson's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Robertson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Mason is aware though and is defending well.
Robertson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mason. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Mason sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Robertson's guard.
Mason takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Kenny Mason overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Mason is looking for a kimura here.
Mason landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

Mason escapes and gets back to his feet.
Mason is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Robertson can do to turn this around?

Robertson has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.

Robertson wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Mason is now in half guard.

Mason winds up and cracks Robertson with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Mason lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Robertson quite badly. Robertson pulls Mason in close trying to recover. Mason postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Robertson on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Robertson doesn't seem to be complaining too much.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:43 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Kenny Mason!
