Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sam McManus! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Nigel McGuiness! The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Ian Loll and Steve Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A really sloppy takedown attempt there from McGuiness. McGuiness avoids a punch combination nicely.
McGuiness jabs at McManus's body. McGuiness throws a head kick that misses. McGuiness keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from McManus. McGuiness scores with a jab. McManus acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
It looks like Sam McManus has been cut. McManus takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
McManus looking for a takedown here - he's got it. This has been an exciting period of action! McManus decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. McManus keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. McManus throws out a loose jab but McGuiness uses good head movement to avoid it. McManus tries to clinch but McGuiness is having none of it. A jab from McGuiness misses. McManus tries to clinch there but McGuiness circles away.
That's one minute gone in the round. A decent looking cross lands there for McGuiness. McGuiness lands the left hand. A left and a right from McManus both land. Nice combination.
It looks like Nigel McGuiness has been cut. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. McGuiness shoots in and drives through. McManus sprawls well. Sam McManus has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nigel McGuiness. Donk. McGuiness catches McManus right on the button with a cross. McManus moves into the clinch successfully.
McManus has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. McGuiness is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. McManus is breathing heavily. McGuiness has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate. McGuiness avoiding damage as McManus throws knees to the body.
McManus controlling the action here for a moment.
McManus tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
McManus breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. McGuiness loads up on a big right hand but McManus slips the punch. McGuiness misses with a jab, cross combination.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fight stays on the outside here - McManus looks like he's thinking about clinching though. McGuiness tries to work over McManus's front leg with a kick but McManus checks it. McGuiness lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
McManus lands a jab to the head.
McManus with a poor takedown and McGuiness counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in McManus's guard now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. McManus throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
McGuiness controls from within his opponent's guard. McGuiness really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McManus. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. McGuiness got a little sloppy there for a moment and McManus has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, McGuiness has managed to get both his arms back between McManus's legs - danger averted. McGuiness controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
That's three minutes gone in the round. McManus is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
McGuiness content to stall in guard here. McManus is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. McManus looking to sweep here. No luck so far. McManus trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. McGuiness lands a couple of digs. McManus is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
McManus controls McGuiness momentarily but McGuiness frees himself.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. McGuiness fails with a takedown attempt. McGuiness tries to clinch but McManus moves out of range. A swing and a miss from McGuiness. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. McGuiness throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. McManus was covering up waiting for the punch and McGuiness finishes the takedown easily into guard. McManus escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. McGuiness gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Nigel McGuiness dominated that round. Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
McManus darts in trying to clinch and McGuiness counters with a right hand to the body. McGuiness ducks down and throws a hook to the body. McGuiness throws the left hand but McManus avoids the punch easily. McGuiness swinging wilding here.
McManus dives in and grabs McGuiness's left leg, looking for a takedown. McGuiness pushes down on McManus's head and hops out. McGuiness clinches. McManus misses with some punches.
McManus fails to pull guard.
McManus jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as McGuiness walks away with a smile on his face. McManus gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sam McManus. That's going to take a lot out of him. McGuiness moves into the clinch successfully.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. McManus tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. McGuiness blocks an elbow strike. McManus tries to break the clinch but McGuiness is controlling the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. McManus trying to stall but McGuiness improves his position.
An uppercut to the body lands inside from McManus. McManus changes levels and goes for a takedown here. McGuiness fights it off and pushes away nicely.
McGuiness thuds his right hand into McManus's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. McGuiness closes the distance and pushes McManus back into the cage. McManus gets underhooks to prevent McGuiness's takedown attempt.
McGuiness wants to get back to striking at distance but McManus won't allow it.
McGuiness has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but McManus regains guard immediately. McGuiness showing good wrestling skills to control the position. McGuiness won't allow McManus to get back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McManus wants to sweep but no luck. McGuiness seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. McManus working a defensive guard but McGuiness manages to pass into side control anyway.
McManus can't do much from the bottom here. McManus trying his best to control but McGuiness has mounted him. McGuiness content just to control the position here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. McGuiness goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now McManus is on top in guard.
McManus is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. McGuiness throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. McManus scores with a decent looking elbow strike. McManus trying to control the position from guard on top but McGuiness is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McManus trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. McManus wants to control from the top but McGuiness keeps moving. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Nigel McGuiness showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
McManus wants to clinch up but McGuiness keeps it at a distance. Nigel McGuiness seems to be getting the better of the standup. McManus sets himself and throws a head kick that knocks McGuiness to the ground! McManus dives into full mount looking to finish! McManus has control of McGuiness's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and McGuiness regains control of the situation pretty easily.
McManus swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and McGuiness is now in McManus's guard. A big mistake from McManus there, giving up the dominant position! McGuiness pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McManus is keeping the position for now. Both fighters are breathing heavily. McGuiness controlling from the top position.
That's one minute gone in the round. McGuiness loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. McManus is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and McGuiness defends well. McGuiness stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McManus swivels though and keeps the full guard. McGuiness stops McManus from standing up. McGuiness controls from within his opponent's guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. McManus is working an open guard so McGuiness takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Nigel McGuiness seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. McManus moves into the clinch. McManus trying to control the position but instead, McGuiness has worked for underhooks and has pushed McManus into the cage. McManus's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. McManus tries to clinch there but McGuiness circles away.

and McManus counters with a two punch combo. McManus doesn't manage to clinch there - McGuiness circles away.
Nigel McGuiness is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. McManus misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
That's three minutes gone in the round. McGuiness is looking to clinch. McManus ducks right into an uppercut from McGuiness. McGuiness misses with a double jab.
A head kick misses from McManus. McGuiness decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. McManus actively working from the bottom here. McManus trying to control here.
McGuiness slows the pace down in half guard. McManus is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
That's four minutes gone in the round. McManus wants to control but McGuiness is keeping busy.
McGuiness perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. McManus trying to control from the bottom.
McManus is trying to control but McGuiness manages to pass to mount!
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Sam McManus. Well McGuiness has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality.
