Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sean Hughes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Thiago Silva! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Silva dives in and grabs Hughes's left leg, looking for a takedown. Hughes pushes down on Silva's head and hops out. Hughes rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Silva moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Hughes lands a really nice looking cross but Silva seems unphased.
Hughes is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
It looks like Thiago Silva has been cut. Hughes fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Silva slips a straight right by Hughes. Hughes tries to bum rush Silva with a series of wild strikes but Silva uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Sean Hughes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Hughes misses with a looping left. Silva closes the distance and clinches up with Hughes, looking for a takedown. Silva pushes Hughes against the cage but Hughes circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Hughes throws a hook but Silva avoids it easily. Silva ducks under a wild hook from Hughes. Silva blocks a jab. Silva rushes Hughes and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Hughes turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Hughes manages to end up in side control. Silva struggling a bit here. Silva is working to avoid the ground and pound but Hughes connects with a decent elbow. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Hughes working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Hughes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Silva is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Hughes is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hughes postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Silva managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Hughes.
Silva is looking for a sweep. Silva is trying to control Hughes's posture but Hughes avoids it. Hughes lands some shots froms side control.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Silva will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Sean Hughes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Thiago Silva. Silva closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Hughes did well to prevent Silva getting side control. Hughes actively working from the bottom here. Silva trying to control the action but Hughes is working from the bottom. Silva has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Hughes defend it? Silva steps over the head and cranks it - Hughes is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Silva!
