PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Minatay Mibangon (ranked 23468 p4p, 23421 weight class) and Wala Sapi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wala Sapi has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 44 - 61 - 11, fighting out of Las Vegas, Minatay Mibangon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 56 - 50 - 11, fighting out of Las Vegas, Wala Sapi!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Tiny Johnson and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Mibangon keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Sapi fails with a takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Sapi.
Minatay Mibangon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wala Sapi.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sapi shoots in looking for a takedown. Mibangon tries to sprawl out of it but Sapi keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mibangon manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Sapi throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Mibangon's waist but Mibangon gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sapi off to one side.
Mibangon quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.

Mibangon throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Sapi was covering up waiting for the punch and Mibangon finishes the takedown easily into guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mibangon is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Sapi is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sapi tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Mibangon stays in close to Sapi's body and controls the position.
Sapi is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Sapi is looking to stand up but Mibangon isn't so interested in that idea.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Sapi shoots in and bounces Mibangon off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mibangon is adopting a defensive guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Minatay Mibangon dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Sapi changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mibangon tries to avoid it but Sapi manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mibangon to the ground. Mibangon escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

and Sapi counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Mibangon is trying is best to control the position here.
Sapi is controlling the pace.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mibangon tries to get to full guard but Sapi has control of the leg.
Sapi content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Mibangon preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sapi seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Mibangon fails with the takedown.
Sapi replies with a solid counter kick to the body but Mibangon blocks it well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Sapi shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mibangon napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Mibangon parries the strikes from Sapi easily there. Sapi is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Mibangon to escape.
Sapi is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Sapi in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Mibangon holds on to Sapi's head and controls the position momentarily.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sapi content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Sapi dives in and grabs Mibangon's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mibangon pushes down on Sapi's head and hops out.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Wala Sapi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Sapi drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Mibangon is trying to control Sapi's posture but Sapi avoids it.
Sapi happy to just control the position for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mibangon wants to control but Sapi postures up.
Sapi wants to control but Mibangon is keeping him busy.
Mibangon is in a bad spot here and he knows it... just holding on for now.
Mibangon wants to control but Sapi postures up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Mibangon looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Sapi is fending him off so far but Mibangon persists. Nope, Sapi circles away and we're back to standing.

Mibangon bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Sapi is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Mibangon remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sapi is looking for a sweep.
Mibangon is staying tight to Sapi's torso, preventing him from escaping.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sapi stuck in half guard on the bottom here.
Mibangon working away.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Mibangon shoots in and bounces Sapi off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Wala Sapi.
I think Sapi has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
