This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Rio de Janeiro, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Mark Spagnolo! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Gozo Shioda! The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Yukihiro Shimada and Shigeki Sano.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Spagnolo avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Spagnolo seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance. Spagnolo rushes Shioda and presses him up against the ropes. Shioda jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Spagnolo walks away with a smile on his face. Shioda gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Shioda tries to clinch there but Spagnolo circles away.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Shioda stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Spagnolo swivels though and keeps the full guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shioda trying to control the position from guard on top but Spagnolo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Spagnolo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Shioda pushes down on Spagnolo's leg and manages to get into half guard. Spagnolo is trying to get back to full guard. Spagnolo slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Shioda stays in close to Spagnolo's body and controls the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Spagnolo keeping moving, preventing Shioda from controlling successfully. Spagnolo is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Spagnolo is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Shioda is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Shioda can't escape the position.
