Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Henry Holliday! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Brain Smasher! The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Frank Dennis and Alan Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Holliday shoots in but no luck this time. Holliday tries to score a power double leg takedown but Smasher sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Holliday somewhat. Holliday tries for a takedown but Smasher sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Henry Holliday. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smasher looks to score with a jab to the body but Holliday is just out of range. Holliday closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Holliday lands in his opponent's guard. Holliday wants to control from the top but Smasher keeps moving. Smasher bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Holliday's guard. Holliday avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Smasher is in close to Holliday's body, working some short punches and elbows. Smasher trying to control but Holliday is working from the bottom. Holliday utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smasher decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Holliday, up you get! Smasher throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Holliday was covering up waiting for the punch and Smasher finishes the takedown easily into guard. Smasher avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Holliday has a closed guard, preventing Smasher from standing up. Smasher keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Holliday's head. Holliday working for a triangle but Smasher defends it easily.
Holliday is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Holliday is breathing heavily. Smasher wants to control from the top but Holliday keeps moving.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smasher with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Smasher trying to control but Holliday is working from the bottom. Smasher is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Smasher chips away with some ground and pound. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smasher wanted to stand there but Holliday had control of the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Holliday working for a triangle but Smasher defends it easily.
Holliday preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Smasher tries to free his leg and advance position but Holliday is retaining full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smasher trying to control the position from guard on top but Holliday is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Smasher with a flurry of punches that miss. Holliday is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Holliday is on top in guard.
Holliday drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Holliday jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Smasher is trying to keep Holliday in close.
Smasher manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Holliday manages to get himself to full guard.
Smasher is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Smasher with a flurry of punches that miss.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Holliday is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Smasher has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Holliday is working away from the top position though. Holliday is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Smasher kicks off Holliday and gets to his feet. Holliday doesn't succeed with the takedown and Smasher decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Holliday's guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Smasher scoring with punches to the head and body. Smasher postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Smasher wanted to stand there but Holliday had control of the position. Smasher stands up from Holliday's guard - Smasher perhaps looking for a knockout. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Brain Smasher dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Holliday scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Holliday tries for a takedown but Smasher circles away easily and Smasher counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Smasher lands a jab to the head.
Holliday moves out of range as Smasher strikes. Holliday misses with a takedown and Smasher counters with a nice uppercut. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Smasher looks to land a right hand but Holliday moved out of range. Holliday avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smasher slips under a jab from Holliday. A left lands for Smasher. Holliday with a poor takedown and Holliday takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Henry Holliday. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smasher fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Holliday sprawls well initially but Smasher persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Smasher is controlling the pace.
Smasher seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Holliday does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Smasher trying to pass the guard but Holliday defending well. Smasher throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Brain Smasher has got the better of the ground game so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Holliday pushes Smasher off and gets back to his feet. Holliday gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Smasher counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Smasher uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Holliday has time to react. Smasher tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Holliday has his takedown stuffed and Smasher connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Smasher drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Holliday tries to improve position but can't. Smasher lands an elbow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smasher is trying to get an arm triangle but Holliday is defending well. Smasher looks up at the clock and then as Holliday takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Smasher smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Holliday sneaks out the side door and pushes Smasher away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape. Holliday fails with the takedown and Smasher counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Smasher. Smasher looking to sit in guard and control but Holliday gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Holliday stops Smasher from standing up. Holliday drops back looking for a submission - "I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna break your leg" says Holliday as he cranks on the unfortunate limb! Smasher screams and taps out before any major damage is done! Don't mess with Holliday! Nice submission victory there!
