This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the featherweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 38 wins and 24 losses; John McCain! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 10 losses; George Smith! The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Ren Mimura and Taro Takaoka.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Smith. McCain changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Smith fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. No luck for Smith with that takedown attempt. John McCain has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of George Smith. Smith scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: McCain (0) vs (2) Smith McCain has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Smith is working away from the top position though. Smith looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

That's one minute gone in the round. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. McCain tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control. Smith trying to advance position but McCain counters by regaining guard. Smith tries to free his leg and advance position but McCain is retaining full guard. Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but McCain is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. McCain is adopting a defensive guard. Smith drops back, looking for a kneebar! McCain looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. McCain looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from McCain! Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: McCain (4) vs (2) Smith Smith is looking to reverse the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McCain tries to advance to mount but can't. Smith can't do much from the bottom here. We've been hearing good reports from McCain's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Smith is trying to get back to half guard. McCain controlling the position from side mount. Smith tries to improve position but can't. You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here as McCain stalls from top position. McCain tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. McCain controls the position. Smith is trying to get back to half guard. Smith trying to remain calm as McCain controls from the top position. Smith prevents McCain from improving position. Smith is looking to regain half guard here but McCain keeps moving and retains side control. The referee asks McCain politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. McCain prefers to stall for the moment though.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Smith has one of McCain's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage. Smith being controlled for a moment. Smith stops McCain from passing to mount. McCain in side control, just content to control the action for now. Smith tries to buck McCain off but McCain is having none of it.
That's five minutes gone in the round. McCain works to advance to full mount. Smith defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Score +2 for reaching mount: McCain (6) vs (2) Smith McCain trying to control but he's not successful this time. Smith can't escape the position.
McCain manages to capitalize on a mistake by Smith to take his back! Score +3 for taking back: McCain (9) vs (2) Smith Smith is keeping busy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smith trying to control but not successfully. Smith is trying to break free.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Smith trying to control the hands but McCain won't let him. McCain has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Smith's body.
McCain is cranking Smith's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Smith! He's tightened the choke and Smith is tapping out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 7:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). John McCain! A relieved looking John McCain thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it. |
