PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ibrahim Nurzhan (ranked 3602 p4p, 4120 weight class) and Smedt Van Kampen (ranked 400 p4p, 433 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Nurzhan might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Kazakh Disco Dance. The key to victory for Ibrahim Nurzhan has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ibrahim Nurzhan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Smedt Van Kampen!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Tiny Johnson and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nurzhan throws a quick inside leg kick.
Nurzhan throws a head kick but Van Kampen moves out of range.
Nurzhan does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Nurzhan throws a sloppy head kick and Van Kampen moves out of range easily.
Nurzhan moves out of range of the leg kick from Van Kampen.
Van Kampen takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Van Kampen lands with a straight right. Nurzhan didn't see that one coming.
Nurzhan tries to clinch up but Van Kampen circles away and keeps his distance.
Nurzhan misses with an attempted mid kick.
Nurzhan looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Van Kampen throws a series of punches but Nurzhan moves out of range.

and Van Kampen counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Nurzhan has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Van Kampen off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Van Kampen tries to advance to mount but Nurzhan denies him.
Nurzhan is trying to escape the position but Van Kampen is controlling the position.
Van Kampen's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Nurzhan sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Van Kampen stops Nurzhan from getting back to his feet.
Van Kampen wants to free his trapped foot but Nurzhan is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Van Kampen is thwarting Nurzhan's attempts to control the position.
Nurzhan won't allow Van Kampen to pass to mount.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Nurzhan is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Nurzhan wants to control but Van Kampen is keeping busy.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Van Kampen is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Van Kampen is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Nurzhan to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Nurzhan shrugs it off.
Van Kampen takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Van Kampen prevents Nurzhan from getting the reversal.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
It looks like Van Kampen might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Nurzhan tries to lock up and control but Van Kampen gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Van Kampen looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Van Kampen wants to finish this one by submission but Nurzhan is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Van Kampen.

Smedt Van Kampen dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Nurzhan throws the left hand but Van Kampen avoids the punch easily.

Van Kampen passes Nurzhan's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Van Kampen wants to pass to mount but Nurzhan is defending the position.

Van Kampen drops back looking for a leg! Nurzhan is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Nurzhan manages to kick Van Kampen off! Van Kampen jumps back into Nurzhan's guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Van Kampen wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Nurzhan, who protects the arm well.
Nurzhan is letting Van Kampen control him for a moment.
You can see the frustration on Nurzhan's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Van Kampen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Nurzhan is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Van Kampen is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Nurzhan is just riding it out for now. Van Kampen eventually gives up the hold.
