PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tavish Gray (ranked 583 p4p, 1972 weight class) and Xavier Schmidt (ranked 80 p4p, 249 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tavish Gray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Xavier Schmidt!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Percy O'Donnell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gray misses with a straight left.
Gray seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Gray misses with a body shot.
Schmidt doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Gray leaves Schmidt with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Nice takedown defense from Gray. No joy for Schmidt on that attempt.
Gray scores with a nice right hand.

It looks like Xavier Schmidt has been cut.
Gray loads up on a big right hand but Schmidt slips the punch.
Gray throws a hook to the side of Schmidt's head but Schmidt sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Schmidt throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gray's waist but Gray gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Schmidt off to one side.
Tavish Gray has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Xavier Schmidt.
Schmidt moves forwards but Gray connects with a nice, crisp jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gray swings away with a body shot that misses

and Schmidt counters with a single leg into guard. Gray didn't expect that.
Gray keeping moving, preventing Schmidt from controlling successfully.
Gray has his hands on Schmidt's head, controlling the position.
Schmidt throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Gray is trying to control the position but Schmidt postures up.
Schmidt with a flurry of punches that miss.
Gray working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Schmidt.
Gray keeping full guard, as Schmidt tries to pass.
Schmidt preventing the sweep.
Schmidt throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Gray works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Gray avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Gray wants to stand but Schmidt is controlling the position.
Gray trying to control the position.
Schmidt has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Schmidt in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Gray on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Gray tries to get out of the position.
Schmidt in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Gray not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Schmidt misses with a takedown attempt - Gray sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Schmidt moves out of range of the strikes.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Schmidt! But no joy.
Schmidt takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Gray connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Schmidt slips a jab from Gray.
Schmidt tries to counter with a clinch but Gray shakes him off and moves away.
Gray clobbers Schmidt with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Schmidt shoots in for a takedown but Gray shows good takedown defense.

Schmidt shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Gray is trying to defend but Schmidt finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Schmidt throwing shots but Gray is blocking nicely.
Gray preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Gray is looking to control Schmidt's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gray avoid being mounted?

Schmidt is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gray defends it well.
Schmidt is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Schmidt lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Schmidt seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Gray does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Gray is doing well to control the position and prevent Schmidt from advancing to side control.
Gray is trying to stand.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Schmidt connects with a nice short shot to Gray's temple.
Schmidt blocks the strikes from Gray.
Schmidt thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Gray's head.
Schmidt is looking to take a break and control but Gray is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Gray knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Schmidt on the ground.
Schmidt not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Schmidt thows a huge punch but Gray dodges it nicely.
Schmidt is trying to control the action in half guard but Gray is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Schmidt is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gray sees it coming and defends easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Tavish Gray will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Xavier Schmidt's cut.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Gray throws a monster overhand right that drops Schmidt! Gray follows up with more strikes from mount and the fight is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:05 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Tavish Gray!
After winning the bout, Tavish Gray thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
