The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Martelo rushes Mercado and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Martelo tries to pull guard but Mercado forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Mercado has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Martelo is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Mercado has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Martelo after a bit of a struggle. Mercado is trying to drag Martelo to the mat but Martelo just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Tiago Martelo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dante Mercado. Martelo drags the fight down to the ground.
Mercado won't allow Martelo to sweep him here. Mercado must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
